GAME NOTES: The first-ever meeting between the IUPUI Jaguars and the Mocs of Chattanooga is set for this afternoon at Orleans Arena, as the teams conclude their time in the Las Vegas Invitational.
The Jaguars have struggled quite a bit in the early part of the 2013-14 season, winning just a single game in seven opportunities, that lone victory coming against IU Northwest at home, 88-53, 10 days ago. IUPUI has fallen to Northwestern, Missouri and, yesterday, Gardner-Webb (61-54) in this event.
As for the Mocs, they too have found wins hard to come by this season. In fact, the team has yet to take down another program from Division I, with the only two triumphs coming early on versus Covenant and Montreat. On Thursday, the team was taken down by Morehead State in this tourney, 88-75.
IUPUI led by three points very early against the Bulldogs yesterday, but the team ended up with a total of just eight field goals in the period and 31.7 percent shooting from the floor overall, en route to the seven-point loss. Ian Chiles scored a team-best 22 points, shooting 9-of-20 from the field, while Mitch Patton chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds for a team that converted only 4-of-16 behind the 3-point line.
Chiles, the leading scorer in four games this season, is good for 18.6 ppg, although his 29.3 percent effort beyond the arc and 64.0 percent accuracy at the free-throw line leave a lot to be desired. Patton is not only second on the unit with 14.5 ppg, he is also one of the better rebounders with more than seven boards per contest. Working against the squad has been the free-throw shooting of the competition, with teams combining to make an outstanding 83.7 percent.
Chattanooga ended up shooting a solid 50.9 percent from the field against Morehead State on Thursday, but the defense simply could not keep the Eagles under control as they shot a staggering 72.3 percent from the floor, 82.6 percent in the second half alone. Z. Mason led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 8-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 behind the 3-point line, while Gee McGhee and Greg Pryor pitched in with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
After the performance by Morehead State yesterday, the Mocs are now allowing opponents to shoot an average of 50.5 percent from the floor, en route to 78.0 ppg. However, the offense is still generating 85.0 ppg thanks to the efforts of Mason (16.3 ppg) and McGhee (15.0 ppg), both of whom are shooting at least 50 percent from the field.
Chattanooga's offensive numbers have been somewhat inflated based on the lopsided performances in the two wins in which they scored a combined 227 points. In the other five outings the Mocs have combined for only 368 points, an average of under 74 ppg, although that might not make a difference against IUPUI today.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Chattanooga 79, IUPUI 68
