GAME NOTES: Chattanooga brings its seven-game winning streak to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Saturday as the Mocs take on the Wofford Terriers in a Southern Conference rematch from a week ago.
The Mocs' recent string of success was extended Thursday when they pulled out an 80-70 road win over Appalachian State. Double-double machine Z. Mason scored 22 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added six blocks, while three of his teammates also scored in double figures.
Martynas Bareika netted 16 points, hitting 4-of-9 from 3-point range, while Casey Jones chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds. Ronrico White rounded out the top scorers with 13 points off the bench.
Chattanooga is off to its best conference start since opening 7-0 in 2010-11.
Mason, who has recorded eight double-doubles already this season, leads the Mocs with 18.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per gam and shoots an efficient 51.5 percent from the field. Jones is second on the squad with 11.6 ppg, and Gee McGhee contributes 10.5 ppg.
Prior to Thursday's win, the Mocs snuck by Wofford by one point, 70-69, last Saturday. The Terriers have not played since and will be looking for revenge.
Wofford, which trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, rallied by shooting 46.9 percent after the break. Jaylen Allen made a layup and had a chance for a three-point play with eight seconds left, but missed the free- throw attempt. McGhee was fouled on the other end but missed both attempts, giving the Terriers one last chance, but Karl Cochran turned the ball over and the Mocs escaped.
Cochran netted a team-high 20 points in the tough loss, while Spencer Collins chipped in 11 points and Lee Skinner finished with a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds.
The Terriers have the lowest scoring average in the SoCon at 65.8 ppg, but they counter their lack of offensive firepower with the league's best defense that surrenders just 65.9 ppg. Wofford's offense revolves around the trio of Collins, Cochran and Skinner. Collins is contributing a team-high 13.4 ppg and Cochran is close behind at 12.7 ppg. Skinner is posting 11.5 ppg and is also fourth in rebounding in the SoCon with 8.4 rpg.
Even though the Mocs are riding high, they only narrowly got by Wofford on their home floor last week. The Terriers "limited" Mason to 17 points and seven boards in that one, and if they can somehow pull that off again, they should get a signature win against the conference leader.
