GAME NOTES: The La Salle Explorers have made their way north to battle the St. Bonaventure Bonnies in an Atlantic 10 Conference clash at the Reilly Center.
After blowing out Fordham, 89-53, on Saturday, the Explorers are riding a two- game win streak, and they've been victorious in four of their last five overall. Two of those wins came against nationally-ranked foes in Butler and VCU, and they are the only team in the A-10 to defeat both.
St. Bonaventure has won two of its last three and four of its last six overall, with victories over Temple and Saint Joseph's coming in that stretch. Most recently, the Bonnies upended Rhode Island in a 67-61 final on the road this past Saturday. Since La Salle joined the conference for the 1995-96 campaign, St. Bonaventure has never defeated all three Philadelphia-based A-10 schools in the same regular season.
La Salle leads the all-time series with SBU, 13-11, and has won the last two games. The last meeting on the Bonnies home floor resulted in a 75-73 double- overtime victory for the Explorers in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
Sam Mills hit a career-high seven 3-pointers on the way to 21 points in a blowout win over Fordham. It was the most treys by an Explorer since Darnell Harris hit eight vs. Dayton on Feb. 21, 2008. La Salle made 18 3-pointers in the win against Fordham, tying a school record. The Explorers made 18 long- range buckets versus the Rams, the most by any team during the 2012-13 season, and the most in Division I since Longwood made 20 vs. VMI on Dec. 20, 2011.
La Salle is firing at 36.4 percent from beyond the arc, fourth-best in the A-10 for a team that's averaging 72.2 ppg, third-best in the conference. The downfall for La Salle has been its interior defense, as it is allowing teams to shoot 44.4 percent from the field, which is the second-worst mark yield in the A-10. Conversely, foes are making just 30.9 percent from 3-point range, which is the league's top mark. Ramon Galloway is averaging a team-best 17.1 ppg, while Duren comes in at 14.2 ppg and Garland at 12.5 ppg. Jerrell Wright is the fourth player averaging double figures at 10.2 ppg, while Steve Zack is the top rebounder at 6.6 rpg, with Wright close behind (6.5 rpg).
Trailing 53-46 with less than eight minutes remaining, St. Bonaventure overcame some adversity and claimed a comeback victory over Rhode Island on Saturday night to split its week-long road trip. Senior Eric Mosley knocked down five 3-pointers, including one with 22 seconds remaining that gave the Bonnies a four-point lead. Mosley finished with a game- and career-high 21 points, 17 of which came in the second half.
Conger is the only player in the A-10 to lead his team in points (13.9 ppg), rebounds (6.5 rpg) and assists (2.8 apg). The Bonnies have two others averaging double figures in scoring in Chris Johnson (12.5 ppg) and Eric Mosley (10.5 ppg). Mosley is fourth in the A-10 in 3-point percentage (.439). Johnson has hit 29 straight free throws and 38 of his last 39, helping him to lead the league in free-throw percentage in conference games at 96.8 percent (30-of-31). Not surprisingly, as a team, the Bonnies lead the league in free- throw percentage (.739). They are also third in 3-point field goal percentage (.372). Unfortunately, they are dead-last in field goal defense (.451) and second-to-last in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.365).
The Bonnies would love to sweep the Philly A-10 schools, but the Explorers have been on fire from long distance and are one of the top scoring teams in the conference. Look for La Salle to exploit St. Bonaventure's weak defense and go home with the victory.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: La Salle 78, St. Bonaventure 65
