Garcia-Lopez, Nieminen advance in Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Jarkko Nieminen were second-round winners Monday at the Winston-Salem Open, a final U.S. Open tune-up.

The fifth-seeded Garcia-Lopez of Spain rallied past German Dustin Brown 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Wake Forest University.

Nieminen, the No. 15 seed, beat German Benjamin Becker by a 7-5, 6-4 margin.

Sam Querrey defeated Spain's Pere Riba 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in first-round action. Querrey will next face fellow American Steve Johnson in a second-round match Tuesday.

In other opening-round action, oft-injured Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu handled American wild card Robby Ginepri 6-3, 7-5, 6-foot-8 Pole Jerzy Janowicz beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-4, and recent Kitzbuhel champion and qualifier David Goffin of Belgium doused Austrian veteran and defending Winston-Salem champion Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-4. Melzer beat Frenchman Gael Monfils in last year's finale here.

Goffin has won his last 23 matches, which includes three straight titles on the Challenger Tour.

Additional first-round wins came for Frank Dancevic of Canada, Dutchman Igor Sijsling, Argentine Federico Delbonis, Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, Blaz Rola of Slovenia and Ukrainian Aleksandr Nedovyesov.

This week's top seed is two-time champion and North Carolina native John Isner.
