Final Score: Philadelphia 1, Miami 0
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Kyle Kendrick and the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Miami Marlins for the second straight night, 1-0.
Kendrick (5-9), who had allowed nine runs -- eight earned -- over his last two starts, tossed seven scoreless innings. The right-hander earned his first win since July 22 after scattering five hits, striking out six and not issuing a walk.
"He had good tempo, rhythm," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "He got the ball, he got set, he kept the flow of the game going."
"He threw fantastic today," Marlins third baseman Greg Dobbs said. "He was able to get strikes early, and then he was able to use his secondary pitches to keep us off balance."
Jimmy Rollins provided the necessary offense for the Phillies, blasting his 41st career leadoff home run as he passed Larry Bowa for most games played by a Phillies shortstop.
Josh Johnson (7-9) was a hard-luck loser after limiting the Phillies to one run on three hits in eight innings. The right-hander, who has a 1.63 earned run average since July 23, struck out seven.
"I just got to go out there and do my job," Johnson said. "My job is to put up a zero and I put up one, so it's my fault."
The Marlins, who were shut out for the third straight game overall, only had three at-bats with a runner in scoring position, losing the second game of this three-game series and for the fifth time in their last six games.
Rollins sent the second pitch of the game, a 1-0 fastball, over the right- field fence to spot the Phillies a quick lead.
Johnson only allowed two more hits following the leadoff blast, but Kendrick did not slip.
Marlins outfielder Bryan Petersen blooped a base hit to left field to start the sixth, then advanced to third after a pair of ground outs. But Carlos Lee stranded Petersen when he popped out to second base, wasting the Marlins' only at-bat with a runner on third in the series.
Josh Lindblom worked a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon worked around a two-out walk in the ninth to nail down his 26th save.
