Boise, ID (Sports Network) - Adam Muema ran for 127 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries on Saturday as San Diego State knocked off No. 19 Boise State, 21-19, at Bronco Stadium.
Walter Kazee helped out with the rushing attack for the Aztecs (7-3, 5-1 MWC), by running for 37 yards and a key touchdown on 12 carries, while Adam Dingwell threw for 105 yards and one interception on 12-of-18 passing.
"I think our team believed that they could do it and obviously you have to believe you can do it before you do it. We got a little help from everybody," San Diego State coach Rocky Long said.
Colin Lockett returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score and Gavin Escobar led the receiving corps with five catches for 58 yards for SDSU, which ran its winning streak to five straight.
Joe Southwick threw for 164 yards, one score and one interception on 20-of-31 passing, while D.J. Harper ran for 81 yards and two scores on 20 carries for Boise State (7-2, 4-1), which lost for just the fourth time in its last 79 home games since the 2000 season.
Dan Paul caught a touchdown pass in the setback for the Broncos.
"San Diego State did a good job," Southwick said. "They came out and played hard. I think there was no quit in us; we played hard the whole game. We just came up short."
Leading 14-13 with the ball and 3:30 to play in the third quarter, the Aztecs extended their lead to 21-13 with an extensive 10-play, 80-yard drive.
Facing a 3rd-and-1, Muema broke through the line and sprinted for 43 yards to the Boise State 18-yard line. Five plays later, Kazee bulled his way into the end zone from the one, making it an eight-point game early in the final quarter.
Boise State answered the bell on its next possession as Southwick led a 16- play drive all the way to the SDSU goal line and hit Paul for the 1-yard touchdown strike.
The Broncos elected to go for the two-point conversion, but Southwick's pass fell incomplete.
The Aztecs got the ball back with 5:35 to play. Faced with a 4th-and-2, Muema ran for 13 yards. San Diego State ran out the rest of the clock.
San Diego State wasted no time taking the lead as Lockett returned the opening kickoff 100 yards to the end zone, putting SDSU up 7-0 early.
Boise State responded on its first possession of the game as Southwick completed five passes during a 12-play drive. Harper capped the march with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Matt Miller's pass fell incomplete on the two-point conversion try, leaving the Broncos trailing, 7-6.
Boise State grabbed the lead late in the second quarter when Southwick led the offense on an 11-play, 92-yard march to the SDSU 16 before Harper capped it with a 16-yard sprint to the end zone on 3rd-and-4, making it a 13-7 game with 2:14 showing before halftime.
Chance Marden missed a 32-yard field goal attempt on San Diego State's first possession of the second half, giving the Broncos the ball at their 20.
Boise State went three-and-out and lined up to punt facing 4th-and-5. On the play, Trevor Harman's punt was blocked and the Aztecs recovered the ball on the Boise State eight.
Muema ran for five yards on the first play of the SDSU drive, then finished the short trek with a 3-yard shuffle to the end zone, making it a 14-13 game early in the third quarter.
Boise State won the only previous matchup between the squads last year, 52-35 ... It was SDSU's first victory over a ranked opponent since 1996 ... Boise State fell to 90-7 against Mountain West Conference opposition since 2000.
