GAMES NOTES: One of the longest rivalries in the Big East will be renewed on Wednesday night when the Seton Hall Pirates take on the Georgetown Hoyas at the Verizon Center.
After ending a four-game losing streak with a win over South Florida last Wednesday, Seton Hall found itself back in the loss column last weekend, as the Pirates were defeated, 71-67, by St. John's at Madison Square Garden. The loss dropped the Pirates to 13-7 overall and under .500 in true road tests (3-4). In league play Seton Hall has managed just a 2-5 record. Seton Hall will be back home against Cincinnati next.
The Hoyas have rebounded nicely from a tough 61-58 loss to South Florida with a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents in its last two bouts. The Hoyas followed up a 63-47 win over Notre Dame with a 53-51 upset of then No. 5 Louisville. That victory came in the first tilt of this three-game homestand that finishes against St. John's on Saturday. Georgetown has been nearly impossible to top at the Verizon Center with a mark of 10-1 on its home floor.
Other than Villanova, Seton Hall has played against Georgetown more than any other opponent. In the 94 total meetings the Hoyas have claimed a 53-41 advantage.
Despite outscoring the Red Storm from beyond the arc, Seton Hall's overall shooting was less than stellar in the loss. The Pirates shot at a 42.4 percent clip while allowing the Red Storm to connect on 49.1 percent of its shots from the field.
In the loss, Eugene Teague (12.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg) had a strong day scoring 22 points but his rebounding effort was below his season average as he collected five boards. Lead scorer Fuquan Edwin (17.2 ppg, 6.0 rpg) had an off night from the floor (4-of-15) but with 14 points to extend his streak of games in double figures to a season-long seven games. The 6-foot-6 swingman uses his length in the backcourt to great effect on the defensive end as well as he ranks second in the conference in steals (2.5 pg). Aaron Cosby (11.8 ppg) is the third and final member of the team scoring in double figures though he has failed to do so in the past two contests.
In a game that featured some strong defensive efforts, Georgetown was able to pull out a win against Louisville by forcing the Cardinals to miss their last five field goal attempts. Georgetown wasn't much better down the stretch as the Hoyas scored just three points in the final five minutes.
Putting forward strong defensive pressure has been the norm for the Hoyas this season. Georgetown is allowing just 55.5 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting. Each of those marks is among the top 25 in the country. That has made up for the Hoyas' rather lackluster offensive production as they rank second to last in the conference in scoring (63.4 ppg). Georgetown is a team built from the inside out with forward Otto Porter (14.7 ppg, 7.9 rpg) the lead scoring option. Porter has really had to step up his game in recent weeks after Greg Whittington (12.1 ppg, 7.0 rpg) was suspended earlier in the month for a violation of team rules. Markel Starks (11.6 ppg) serves as the team's primary ball handler and most effective scorer in the backcourt.
The Hoyas will have no problem clamping down on Edwin and forcing the Pirates to find offense elsewhere. With their top option slowed the Pirates will struggle to find enough scoring punch to pull out a win here.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Georgetown 69, Seton Hall 60
