Duke tops Wake to reach women's College Cup final
Kennesaw, GA (Sports Network) - Mollie Pathman scored twice in the second half and Duke advanced to the women's College Cup final for the second time with a 4-1 win Friday night over ACC rival Wake Forest at KSU Soccer Stadium.
Kim DeCesare opened the scoring in the 43rd minute for Duke, and Pathman added goals in the 51st and 57th, before Kaitlyn Kerr added a fourth in the 75th, as Duke (22-3-1) earned revenge for a loss to Wake (18-4-4) in the ACC tournament semifinals.
Duke will play unbeaten Stanford, which defeated ACC champion Florida State in the other semifinal 3-0 on Friday, in Sunday's finale at KSU Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m. (ET).
The Blue Devils last played in the championship in 1992, a 9-1 defeat to North Carolina. Wake Forest has never reached the championship.
Wake Forest was the better side early in the first half, but it failed to make Duke pay for a sluggish start, as Rachel Nuzzolese had the team's lone shot on goal just after the midway point.
Duke settled in and grabbed the lead just before halftime, as Nicole Lipp sent a corner kick in from the right that sailed through traffic to DeCesare on the far side. DeCesare shot through traffic and off Wake goalie Aubrey Bledsoe for her fifth goal of the season.
The Blue Devils doubled the lead after half, as Laura Weinberg played the ball in from the right side of the area across the box and Pathman lunged to direct the ball inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.
Wake Forest pulled a goal back in the 57th minute when Nuzzolese scored off a free kick from 20 yards, but the Demon Deacons gave the goal back just seconds later after Riley Ridgik committed a foul in the area.
Pathman drove the penalty inside the left post with Wake goalie Bledsoe diving the opposite direction for her sixth goal of the season, and Duke restored its two-goal lead just 33 seconds after Nuzzolese's goal.
Kerr capped Duke's impressive win 15 minutes from time as she reached a corner from Lipp and headed from 6 yards inside the right post for her fifth goal in her last five matches.
