Chivas snaps winless skid as Chavez burns Rapids
Commerce City, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Just one week after being traded from Colorado to Chivas USA, Marvin Chavez returned to Dick's Sporting Goods Park with the Goats and tallied a pair of goals in the second half as Chivas handed the Rapids a 3-1 defeat.
Snowy conditions in Colorado made for a rather uneventful first half, but things picked up after the break as Chivas scored three times in the span of 20 minutes before a late consolation goal from the Rapids Deshorn Brown.
The result snaps an eight-game winless run for Chivas and gives the club its first victory since a season-opening win over Chicago.
Another former Rapids player had a hand in the opening goal in the 56th minute as Martin Rivero's right-wing cross was delivered to the back post for Erick Torres, who coasted in to head the ball home from seven yards.
A few minutes later, Dillon Serna blocked a shot from Leandro Barrera on his goal line to keep the Rapids within a goal, while Brown nearly equalized for the home side when he nodded a corner kick off the post.
But Chivas doubled its lead in the 67th when Torres played Chavez in behind the Rapids defense and he slotted his shot past goalkeeper Clint Irwin after making a 50-yard run.
Chavez scored again when he cut out a poor headed pass from Marc Burch that was intended for Irwin, while Brown denied Chivas its first clean sheet of the season when he scored in stoppage time.
