'Caps steal a point at RSL

Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Vancouver Whitecaps FC stole a point at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, netting two late goals for a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake.

The hosts scored two early goals but were unable to hold on for three points as Nicolas Mezquida's 86th-minute strike cut Vancouver's deficit in half before Sebastian Fernandez equalized deep into stoppage time with a sensational shot from distance.

Real Salt Lake (3-0-5) preserves its unbeaten start to the season, though it is a result that surely feels more like a loss.

Vancouver (2-2-4) earns is second consecutive draw but remains winless since March 29.

Salt Lake wasted little time in breaking the deadlock as Joao Plata scored in just the second minute of play, taking a pass from Luke Mulholland before gliding past Johnny Leveron and firing a left-footed strike past David Ousted.

The Claret and Cobalt doubled their advantage just seven minutes later when Alvaro Saborio pounced on a loose ball in the box and curled a first-time effort into the upper corner.

Real Salt Lake enjoyed its two-goal edge until the 86th minute when Mezquida pounced on a rebound conceded by Nick Rimando to flick a shot into the back of the net for his first career MLS goal.

The tying goal came in the fourth minute of stoppage time thanks to a thundering strike from Fernandez, earning his second goal of the year in spectacular fashion.
