Gago returns to Boca Juniors
Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Fernando Gago secured a return to Boca Juniors on Wednesday from Valencia after a fairly unsuccessful spell in Spain.
Gago left Boca during the 2006-07 season to join Real Madrid for a fee of $26 million.
But the Argentina international failed to impress at Madrid and was sent out on loan to Roma before signing for Valencia.
The 27-year-old made just 13 league appearances for Los Che before he was loaned out for the rest of season to Velez Sarsfield in Argentina.
On Wednesday, Gago returned to Boca for a fraction of the price the club received from Madrid, joining his former side for a fee of $2.3 million.
Gago has been capped 45 times by Argentina, and he said the move back to Boca is in the best interest of his long-term future with the national team.
"I was just looking for consistency and a bit of rhythm, so that I can improve as a footballer," Gago said.
"I knew that in order to be picked for the national team you need to be playing regularly and I saw the move to Boca as a great opportunity. It ticked every box. Both Boca and I put in a lot of effort to push the deal through."
