China, Mongolia win gold in judo

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Before Thursday the country of Mongolia had won six silver medals and 10 bronze, but never a gold. That all changed when Tuvshinbayar Naidan won the judo men's 100kg class by topping Askhat Zhitkeyev of Kazakhstan in the final.

Naidan won by waza-ari, but Zhitkeyev's silver is the first ever Olympic medal in judo for Kazakhstan. The Mongolian gained the early advantage, earning a waza-ari at 2:02 with a throw. Naidan kept on attacking, making several attempts at points before finally securing the victory in the last 10 seconds with a second yuko.

Movlud Miraliyev of Azerbaijan won a bronze medal by beating Poland's Przemyslaw Matyjaszek. The other bronze went to Henk Grol of the Netherlands, who defeated Georgia's Levan Zhorzholiani.

China's Yang Xiuli defeated Yalennis Castillo of Cuba to win the gold medal in the women's 78kg division Thursday. Jeong Gyeongmi of Korea and Stephanie Possamai of France shared the bronze. Jeong beat Brazil's Edinanci Silva and Possamai topped Spain's Esther San Miguel.
