NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at San Jose

(Tuesday, October 8th)

Final Score: San Jose 9, NY Rangers 2

San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tomas Hertl scored four goals to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 9-2 thrashing of the New York Rangers on Tuesday.

Hertl became the first player in NHL history to score six goals over his first three career games.

"This is a dream," said Hertl. "This is crazy. I've never scored more than two in a game, maybe."

Justin Braun, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Matthew Nieto, Logan Couture and Dan Boyle also tallied for the Sharks, who improved to 3-0 this season. Antti Niemi made 18 saves in the win.

Brad Richards and Derek Dorsett each scored for the Rangers, who were coming off their first win on Monday against the Kings. Henrik Lundqvist was pulled after giving up four goals on 26 shots and his replacement, Martin Biron, was even worse, allowing five goals on 21 shots.

"The Sharks were on top of their game," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "It's tough to understand, at this point, how we can play so well last night and play this way tonight."

Richards scored the game's first goal on the power play 3 1/2 minutes in, but it was all San Jose from there.

Vlasic tallied less than a minute later, and Boyle slapped one past Lundqvist with just under eight minutes gone in the opening period.

Nieto's snap shot preceded Hertl's first goal of the night near the midway point of the middle session. Couture scored 20 seconds after Hertl's first tally, and the 19-year-old potted his second marker to cap the second.

Dorsett made it 6-2 with his goal 8:22 into the third, but the Sharks finished with three more goals to seal the win.

Hertl netted a slap shot on the power play just over nine minutes into the final session before notching his most impressive goal of the night three minutes later.

Hertl skated in, put the puck between his legs, then snapped it top shelf to make it 8-2.

Braun added his goal with just over four minutes remaining to account for the final difference.
