Description: A source told Joe Stiglich of that Athletics starter A.J. Griffin will undergo Tommy John surgery sometime next week.
Insight: Griffin was shut down more than a month ago due to flexor tendinitis and still felt discomfort when he tried to throw recently. Griffin will become the second Oakland starter to undergo Tommy John surgery in 2014, joining Jarrod Parker.

Insight: He's been diagnosed with flexor tendinitis. All signs point to Griffin beginning the year on the DL. Tommy Milone (6-5, 3.83 ERA last season) will probably take Griffin's place in the starting rotation.

Insight: Griffin could end up missing the start of the season depending upon what the doctor sees. He's struggled this spring with a 10.38 ERA and 2.19 WHIP in 8.2 IP. The A's pitching staff is hurting with both Griffin and Jarrod Parker sidelined.

Insight: A's manager Bob Melvin said that Griffin has been dealing with elbow tendinitis for awhile and that it has been getting worse. The right-hander tossed an even 200 innings this year and while he allowed a major-league-high 36 home runs, Griffin went 14-10 with a 3.83 ERA, 171 strikeouts and a 1.13 WHIP. He hopes to return for the ALCS if the Athletics make it that far.

Insight: He allowed just one run in seven innings (8 K's, 1 BB). Oddly enough, Griffin's ERA during the winning streak hasn't been that impressive (3.60 in 25 innings of work).

Insight: Griffin held Tampa Bay to one run and five hits in seven innings of work. The seven strikeouts Griffin (12-9, 3.84 ERA) registered were his most since August 4th versus Texas. He'll take the mound again Friday versus Houston.

Insight: He somehow has managed to post a less-than-terrible 4.32 ERA in that span. He gave up two longballs and four earned runs over six innings Wednesday against the Mariners and has a 3.84 ERA despite carrying a 4.73 FIP.

Insight: Griffin allowed two homers in the game and has served up 13 bombs in 83 1/3 innings. That's to be expected when you allow more than 46 percent flyballs. Despite the trouble with the longball, Griffin is 5-5 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP.

Insight: Griffin has been outstanding in seven starts, going 3-0 with a 2.51 ERA and a 35/10 K/BB ratio prior to Saturday. The right-hander's fastball velocity reportedly dropped to the low 80s on two consecutive pitches before he was removed, so this may be more than just tightness.
