Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez was 1-for-2 with four walks in the extra-inning lost to the Cardinals on Sunday.
Insight: Sound familar? Pittsburgh lost all three games this weekend in extra innings to the Cardinals. It appeared that Alvarez was going to give the Pirates a, 2-1, victory when he hit a solo bomb in the top of the 12th, but the Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the inning. St. Louis won on a walkoff home run in the 14th. Alvarez is hitting .227 and sadly, has a higher batting average than teammates Josh Harrison, Andrew McCutchen, and Jordy Mercer. Alverez also has five home runs and 12 RBI.

Description: Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez is just 3-for-17 in his lifetime against Cubs starter Jason Hammel.
Insight: Alvarez wasn't in the lineup on Tuesday with Cubs lefty pitcher Travis Wood starting, but Alvarez should start versus the right-handed Hammel on Wednesday. That doesn't mean he should go back into fantasy lineups as Alvarez is hitting just .176 versus Hammel in his career. Two of Alvarez's three hits against Hammel, however, are home runs.

4/21/2015 3:55:00 PM
Description: Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez is an ugly 1-for-18 (.056) with seven strikeouts against Cubs starter Travis Wood.
Insight: Alvarez is still an all-or-nothing hitter with four homers this season and a .233 batting average including 13 Ks in 43 at-bats. Avoid this matchup. Update: Alvarez is not in the starting lineup.

4/19/2015 4:24:00 PM
Description: Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez launched a homer Sunday versus Milwaukee.
Insight: It was his fourth of the season, and he now has seven RBIs as well.

4/19/2015 11:03:00 AM
Description: Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez could be in line for a big day on Sunday.
Insight: He is 8-for-18 lifetime against opposing starter Matt Garza, with one homer and six RBIs. Alvarez will be a solid option on Sunday.

4/9/2015 4:45:00 PM
Description: Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez smashed his first homer of the season.
Insight: He did so in a loss to the Reds. Alvarez went 2-for-4 with the homer and two runs scored, and should be a nice source of power throught the season.

3/3/2015 7:35:00 PM
Description: Pirates corner infielder Pedro Alvarez hit a three-run home run and an RBI double versus the Blue Jays in Tuesday's Spring Training game.
Insight: Both of the hits were to opposite field off Blue Jays starting pitcher Aaron Sanchez. Alvarez's fantasy value is somewhat limited since he is projected to be platooned at first base, but he can certainly still hit 30 home runs if he gets enough at-bats. He should also hit for a higher average if he doesn't face lefties this season. Alvarez hit just .175 versus south paws in 2014.

Cold9/21/2014 7:10:00 PM
Description: Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said on Sunday that first baseman Pedro Alvarez (foot) could return if the team advances to the NLDS according to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
Insight: This confirms that Alvarez will not be ready for the Wild Card game. Alvarez suffered a stress reaction in his left foot in late August and the injury normally takes four to six weeks to recover.

Cold9/7/2014 10:00:00 AM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez an ugly 1-for-18 (.056) versus Cubs left-hander Travis Wood.
Insight: Alvarez has been dealing with a foot problem and has just one at-bat since Aug 26. Sunday is not the day for him to return.

9/5/2014 10:32:00 AM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is questionable for Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Insight: Alvarez left Tuesday's game with a sprain between two toes in his left foot and has not returned to the field since then. He is available to pinch hit, according to Paul Zeise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, but is unlikely ready to play in the field.

8/30/2014 2:16:00 PM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup for the third game in a row.
Insight: Alvarez left Tuesday's game with a sprain between two toes in his left foot and has not returned to the field since then. The Pirates have won both games with Alvarez in the lineup, but he did have three home runs in a three game span last week, so Pittsburgh would like to get him back soon.

8/29/2014 4:50:00 PM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is again not in the lineup on Friday.
Insight: Alvarez left Tuesday's game with a sprain between two toes in his left foot and has not returned to the field since then. Alvarez is still day-to-day, but Ike Davis has been swinging a hot bat, so manager Clint Hurdle might ride out Davis' hot streak at first base anyway.

8/27/2014 11:50:00 AM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's afternoon game against the Cardinals.
Insight: Alvarez sprained his left foot in Tuesday's game and was seen wearing a walking boot in the clubhouse Wednesday morning. He is listed as day-to-day. Alvarez has hit three home runs in the last four games, but Ike Davis, who slugged the game-winning home run on Tuesday, will take over in the meantime.

8/26/2014 10:11:00 PM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez left Tuesday's game due to left foot discomfort, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
Insight: He went 0-for-3 before being replaced by Gaby Sanchez. Alvarez was 4-for-10 with three homers and five RBI in his previous three games.

8/25/2014 10:31:00 PM
Description: Pirates first baseman Pedro Alvarez has gone 4-for-10 with three homers, five RBI and two steals in his last three games.
Insight: Perhaps now that he's at first base he'll be able to focus entirely on hitting rather than worrying about making throws across the diamond. Alvarez made 24 throwing errors at third base this season.

8/23/2014 10:34:00 PM
Description: Pedro Alvarez belted two opposite field home runs against the Brewers on Saturday.
Insight: Alvarez proved to everyone on Saturday why the Pirates will try and get him at-bats at third base. He hit a three-run bomb in the fourth inning to put Pittsburgh ahead for good and added insurance with a solo shot the next inning. It's a great sign for Alvarez, but seeing as he had the same amount of home runs in this game as in July, we are going to hold back our excitement for now. If Saturday says anything though, it says this guy can erupt at any time.

Cold8/22/2014 3:46:00 PM
Description: Pedro Alvarez is a career 2-for-29 (.069) hitter with a double against Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo.
Insight: Alvarez made his debut at first base on Monday and MLB.com reported he would not play third base again this season unless it was an emergency. He is now stuck in a timeshare at first base with Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez, so there is a good chance even without the history Alvarez has against Gallardo that Alvarez will not be in the lineup on Friday. Either way, it would be wise not to put him in your lineup. Update: Alvarez is not in Friday's starting lineup.

Cold8/19/2014 9:46:00 PM
Description: Pedro Alvarez is not expected to see any more action at third base this season, according to mlb.com.
Insight: Alvarez made his debut at first base Monday and was out of the lineup Tuesday. He can no longer play third base due to frequent defensive lapses and is now in a platoon with Ike Davis and Gaby Sanchez. "Everybody is going to have to get some at-bats," manager Clint Hurdle said. "There's a certain method I have in mind. We're not going to quit on anybody. Pedro has shown us a bat that can get white-hot. It hasn't this year." Josh Harrison is the new everyday third baseman.

Cold8/19/2014 3:36:00 PM
Description: Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez is not in Tuesday's starting lineup.
Insight: He can't play third base anymore due to defensive lapses which only leaves him a shared situation at first base. Ike Davis gets the start Tuesday.

Cold8/18/2014 4:56:00 PM
Description: Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez will start Monday night's game at first base.
Insight: After his "throw" to the plate Sunday, he should be banned from playing the hot corner. At least he started to hit over the weekend, going 4-for-11, but he hasn't homered since July 11.
