Description: Mark Saxon of ESPN Los Angeles reports that the Dodgers are expected to pursue Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon.
Insight: Papelbon has quietly had a terrific season, saving 22 games and recording a 1.21 ERA. a 0.86 WHIP and 33 Ks in 37 1/3 innings. If Los Angeles acquires Papelbon, it could move Kenley Jansen (27 saves, 3.49 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) to the eighth inning. Brian Wilson and Chris Perez have faltered as set-up men this season and Papelbon has more closing experience than Jansen. The Dodgers have also used lesser pitchers like Brandon League and Javy Guerra over Jansen in the closer role in the past even after Jansen had proven his dominance.

Description: Tuesday's save against the Padres was the 300th of Jonathan Papelbon's career.
Insight: That puts him at No. 24 on the all-time list. Papelbon (1-1, 1.48 ERA) has been one of the best closers of the last ten years, compiling a 2.37 ERA over 585 1/3 career innings. He's converted 14 of his 15 save chances in 2014.

Description: Jonathan Papelbon will be available if the Phillies need him on Tuesday. SOURCE: Jim Salisbury, Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia
Insight: He sat out Sunday's game because of a sore neck. Papelbon has been outstanding this season, compiling a 1.76 ERA across 15 1/3 innings. Only Francisco Rodriguez, Sergio Romo and Kenley Jansen have converted more saves than Papelbon in 2014 (11 saves in 12 chances).

5/12/2014 11:25:00 AM
Description: Jonathan Papelbon should be available for the Phillies' next game on Tuesday.
Insight: Papelbon was not available Sunday after pitching back-to-back nights and it likely cost both the team and Cole Hamels a win. He's 0-1 with 11 saves, a 1.76 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP.

Cold8/6/2013 10:38:00 PM
Description: Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon had another shaky outing Tuesday against the Cubs.
Insight: Papelbon walked one and gave up three hits and three runs (two earned) after entering with a four-run lead. He has a 4.32 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP and six blown saves in 16 chances since May 29 and hasn't saved a game since July 11.

Description: Hip soreness may be contributing to Jonathan Papelbon's recent struggles. SOURCE: MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM
Insight: The Phillies closer holds a 3.60 ERA since June 1st after opening the year with a 1.31 ERA in his first 20 games. This could hurt his trade value as Papelbon has been mentioned in a number of different trade scenarios including one that would send the five-time All-Star to the Tigers. Still, it's unlikely the Phillies would be able to trade him unless they agreed to take on most of his $13 million salary.

Cold6/22/2013 7:35:00 PM
Description: Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon blew another save Saturday against the Mets.
Insight: Papelbon has now blown three of his last four save chances after beginning the year a perfect 13-for-13 in save opportunities. Papelbon doesn't seem to be injured so we're guessing he's just in a slump. Manager Charlie Manuel might give him a couple days off to help clear his head.

6/16/2013 4:23:00 PM
Description: Nick Cafardo from the Boston Globe suggested in a recent article that the Red Sox could make a play for closer Jonathan Papelbon if the Phillies make him available in a trade.
Insight: Papelbon (1.46 ERA, 13 saves) was a Boston icon during his time with the Red Sox from 2005 to 2011 and is still the club's all-time saves leader. Andrew Bailey (12.00 ERA, 2.25 WHIP over his last three outings) has struggled in the closer's role so the deal makes plenty of sense for the Red Sox. ESPN's Buster Olney hinted that Detroit could be in the market for a closer as well with Jose Valverde in meltdown mode (9.95 ERA, 5 HR allowed in his last seven outings).

6/3/2013 11:58:00 AM
Description: Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon was unavailable on Sunday due to a stomach virus, but should be back closing on Monday.
Insight: Papelbon has pitched very well this season with 11 saves, a 1.31 ERA and 0.73 WHIP in 20 appearances.

3/5/2013 12:11:00 PM
Description: Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon has been scratched from his scheduled Tuesday appearance, but only because of illness, not any arm problems.
Insight: Papelbon hasn't pitched well in his first two spring appearances (43.20 ERA, 6.00 WHIP), but as long as he is physically fine fantasy owners shouldn't worry. He produced 38 saves and a 2.44 ERA and 1.06 WHIP last season and should see more save opportunities in 2013.

Cold7/18/2012 9:24:00 PM
Description: Spotted a two-run lead in the bottom of the 10th, Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon failed to convert the save Wednesday afternoon against the Dodgers. The blown save was Papelbon's third of the season.
Insight: Since beginning the year 17-for-17 in save opportunities, Papelbon has blown three out of his last seven save chances and has seen his ERA balloon from 2.28 to 3.41 during that span.

6/23/2012 8:41:00 PM
Description: Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save as a member of Philadelphia Saturday against the Rays.
Insight: Papelbon allowed two runs on three hits and one walk in an inning of work Saturday. He was able to get a win for the second straight appearance due to Jim Thome's walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth. Papelbon has allowed a run in each of his last two appearances, but he's been one of the most reliable closers in baseball this season so he should be fine.

5/7/2012 10:39:00 PM
Description: Jonathan Papelbon allowed the game-winning three-run homer to pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin Monday night against the Mets.
Insight: The hit was Valdespin's first major league homer. Papelbon's season ERA (0.82 entering the game) ballooned to 3.00 after the home run. It wasn't a save situation for the former Boston closer, so Papelbon remains a perfect nine for nine in save chances this year. Papelbon has pitched remarkably well for the Phillies this year so forgive him for this one bad outing and expect him to be his usual dominant self the next time he takes the hill.

4/5/2012 4:11:00 PM
Description: Jonathan Papelbon earned his first save as a member of the Phillies Thursday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Insight: Papelbon breezed through a 10-pitch inning to preserve Roy Halladay's first win of the season. With Philadelphia's excellent starting rotation, Paplebon should be in line to convert tons of saves this season.

4/20/2011 7:14:00 PM
Description: Jonathan Papelbon gave up two hits and an earned run on the way to his third save of the season.
Insight: He did get one strikeout, but was by no means dominant. As long as he's the Red Sox closer, he's a must start option in all formats.

4/8/2011 4:07:00 PM
Description: Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless 9th inning against the Yankees, striking out 2.
Insight: Papelbon has the stuff to be a dominant closer and the Red Sox should give him plenty of save chances.

3/21/2011 6:14:00 AM
Description: Because of the depth of their bullpen, the Red Sox could trade closer Jonathan Papelbon to Texas. SOURCE: Boston Globe
Insight: Papelbon would get as many save ops if he is dealt to Texas. However, there has been no word from Boston if they are prepared to go with either Bobby Jenks or Daniel Bard as their closer.

3/17/2011 3:04:00 PM
Description: Jonathan Papelbon gave up four runs in 2/3 of an inning today.
Insight: He had been decent but not good in spring training prior to today's game. He will open the season as Boston's closer but they won't hesitate to replace him if he pitches any worse than he did in 2010.

2/23/2011 10:04:00 AM
Description: Closer Jonathan Papelbon was in camp Tuesday, but he didn't participate in drills because he is battling flu-like symptoms, MLB.com reports. He was not in camp Sunday because he was attending to his wife, who was similarly ill.
Insight: This should only be a minor set back for Papelbon as he prepares for the 2011 season. Mariano Rivera's family had similar issues battling the flu before he reported to Yankees' camp. (RapidDraft.com)

2/8/2011 12:10:00 PM
Description: Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon will adjust his approach in 2011. "I will be throwing a lot more off-speed. I'll be throwing my split a lot more, my slider, I'll be throwing a heck of a lot more," he said. "There will be a lot of situations where, instead of pitching off my fastball, I'll be pitching off my split, pitching off my slider, earlier in the count." SOURCE: ESPN.com
Insight: Much has been made of Papelbon's struggles and the Sox responded by adding Bobby Jenks to the mix. If Papelbon improves as a pitcher, not just a thrower, he can return to elite closer status.
