National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at San Francisco
(Saturday, August 16)
Final Score: San Francisco 6, Philadelphia 5
San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Gregor Blanco hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning as the San Francisco Giants came back to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 on Saturday.
The Phillies won the opener of the three-game series 5-3 in 10 innings Friday and had a 5-1 lead in this one before an infield pop-up dropped between Ryan Howard and Chase Utley, leading to a four-run Giants rally in the sixth.
In the eighth, Joe Panik hit a leadoff triple off Antonio Bastardo (5-7) and scored the go-ahead run when Blanco slapped a single off Jake Diekman and past shortstop Jimmy Rollins.
Jeremy Affeldt (3-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings for the win and Sergio Romo got the last two outs, working around Domonic Brown's single to record his 23rd save of the season.
Hunter Pence hit a solo homer and Michael Morse was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Giants, who earned just their second win in eight games.
Howard had three hits and three RBI and Ben Revere got his fifth four-hit game of the season for the Phillies, who have dropped four of five.
Giants right-hander Tim Hudson failed to get an out in the fifth inning and gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks to remain winless in his last five starts.
Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick all but cruised into the sixth, when his solid outing was done in by the blooper-reel mistake by his infield.
After Howard and second baseman Utley let Pablo Sandoval's pop-up fall near the mound, Utley flipped the throw past second for an error, putting runners at first and second with no outs. Morse followed with an RBI double, just the fifth hit allowed by Kendrick.
Mario Hollands then walked Adam Duvall and a run scored on Panik's infield single, which he chopped high off home plate. Blanco added a bloop RBI single off Justin De Fratus and Angel Pagan's deep sacrifice fly to right tied it.
"The bats came alive," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "They started grinding out some at-bats and placing the ball well that one inning and kept the line moving. When that happens it really picks up the energy."
Earlier, Pence belted a one-out homer off Kendrick to left field in the first inning, his 16th of the season.
But the Phillies scored two runs in the third inning to take the lead before chasing Hudson with no outs in the fifth.
In the third, Rollins walked and went to second base on Utley's single before scoring on Howard's hit. Utley then came home on Marlon Byrd's sac fly.
Revere's leadoff single in the fifth and Rollins' walk led to Utley's slapped RBI double to the left-center field gap. Howard then smoked a two-run single through the right side to chase Hudson and give the Phillies a 5-1 lead.
Kendrick was charged with four runs -- three earned -- and is winless in his last four starts (Phillies have won two of the games) ... The teams used a combined 11 pitchers in the 3 1/2-hour game ... The Phillies were 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base.
