National League Game Summary - Washington at Philadelphia
(Friday, July 11)
Final Score: Philadelphia 6, Washington 2
Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Burnett pitched into the eighth inning, Jimmy Rollins belted two homers and the Philadelphia Phillies stayed hot by beating the Washington Nationals, 6-2, in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
Burnett (6-8) was charged for two runs on five hits and walked four with six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings.
"Burnett has been a steady force, he's been a leader, he's been a veteran guy, he's been a workhorse. He really seems to be getting better, pitching quality games and continuing to do that," said Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg.
Domonic Brown added a two-run double for the Phillies, who returned home after sweeping four games at NL Central-leading Milwaukee. They matched a season best with their fifth straight win.
Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann (6-5) exited in the fourth inning with a right bicep cramp. The NL All-Star allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five with no walks in 3 1/3 innings.
"We'll know more tomorrow," said Nationals manager Matt Williams. "Certainly it's always a concern when you have to take a guy out of the game. We'll get more results tomorrow."
The Nationals have dropped three of four.
Philadelphia got on the board in the second, stringing together three consecutive one-out hits. After Ryan Howard struck out, Marlon Byrd and Cody Asche both singled before Brown knocked in them with a double to right-center field.
Grady Sizemore, making his Phillies debut, singled to open the third and Rollins followed with a drive to right to make it 4-0.
Sizemore had his contract purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday. He was released by Boston on June 20 after batting .216 with two home runs and 15 RBI in 52 games.
"Hit two balls right on the nose. Looked like he had a good swing, used the whole field," Sandberg said about Sizemore.
Cameron Rupp plated Byrd in the sixth with a two-out double off the left-field wall. Brown attempted to score as well, but was thrown out at home.
Bryce Harper homered to right off Burnett to begin the seventh, but Rollins answered with a two-out, solo blast in the bottom of the inning.
Ryan Zimmerman knocked in Washington's second run in the eighth with a double down the left-field line off reliever Ken Giles.
The Phillies also won five straight from June 16-20 ... Rollins recorded his ninth career multi-homer game ... Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with a leadoff single in the fifth ... Zimmermann had a 2.04 ERA in his previous five starts against Philadelphia ... Washington swept the Phillies in three games at Nationals Park June 3-5.
