National League Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Chicago
(Sunday, June 22)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 2, Chicago 1
Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Snider homered and Brandon Cumpton tossed seven shutout innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates held on for a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the rubber match of a three-game set at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs mustered only two hits off Cumpton (3-2) before mounting threats against the Pittsburgh bullpen in the final two innings.
Junior Lake and Darwin Barney opened the eighth with back-to-back singles, but Tony Watson escaped the jam by striking out two batters after a sacrifice bunt.
"Obviously not an ideal situation, but pound the strike zone, make a pitch and get them to chase," Watson said.
The Cubs had men on the corners after Pirates closer Mark Melancon gave up consecutive singles to begin the ninth. Chicago got on the board when Nate Schierholtz hit into a fielder's choice, with second baseman Josh Harrison flipping to shortstop Jordy Mercer for the second out.
Melancon then retired Lake on a flyout to right for his 12th save of the season.
"To get those two runners on early and not capitalize on it is unfortunate," said Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
The Pirates scored both of their runs in the third against Jason Hammel (6-5).
Snider led off with a blast to center field, then Josh Harrison came up with a two-out infield single.
Chris Stewart followed the Snider home run with a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout before scoring on Harrison's comebacker that struck the Chicago right-hander.
Hammel gave up six hits and struck out six over seven innings of work.
Pittsburgh right fielder Gregory Polanco finished 0-for-3, ending his career-opening hit streak at 11 games ... The Pirates are 8-1-1 in series at Wrigley Field since the start of 2011 ... The teams wore uniforms from the 1953 season on Sunday ... Chicago had homered in each of its previous eight games ... The Cubs activated catcher Welington Castillo (left rib cage inflammation) from the 15-day disabled list and designated catcher Eli Whiteside for assignment prior to the game.
