GAME NOTES: Hitting their stride at just the right time, the Delaware Blue Hens continue to rule the roost as they entertain the Towson Tigers in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Bob Carpenter Center today.
Delaware had more than a few bumps in the road during the non-conference schedule, but with that behind them, the Hens are now heading in the right direction. Since losing to St. Bonaventure on Dec. 30, the squad has won seven in a row, the latest victory being a 90-77 triumph over Drexel on the road Monday night.
With the win versus the Dragons, Delaware is still perfect in CAA play and all alone atop the league standings.
Just behind Delaware in the standings is a Towson group that is 3-1 versus the rest of the CAA. The Tigers were also on a positive run of late with five consecutive wins, but the team was handed a 57-54 setback by Northeastern earlier this week at home.
In a relationship that dates back to the 1970-71 campaign, the Hens are ahead by a count of 41-29 over Towson. However, the Tigers came out on top in the last two battles, capturing an 85-65 decision at home last February and a 69-66 triumph in Newark three weeks earlier.
Tied with Northeastern at 54-54 in the final seconds in the last outing, the defense for the Tigers allowed a 3-pointer that sunk the hosts and snapped their win streak. Trying to keep Towson on top was Marcus Damas who tallied 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting behind the 3-point line, followed by Rafriel Guthrie who dropped in another 13 points off the bench, although he missed all five of his 3-point tries. As a team, Towson was a mere 6-of-25 out on the perimeter and 31.9 percent successful from the floor overall.
The leading scorer on the season for the Tigers, Jerrelle Benimon attempted only four shots from the floor as he tallied just six points, but cleared 13 rebounds versus Northeastern. Through 19 games, Benimon is averaging 17.9 ppg and 11.3 rpg, making him one of only a handful of players in Division I who is averaging a double-double. Benimon also paces the program with 75 assists and 31 blocked shots, entering him into even more exclusive company. Damas pitches in with 12.3 ppg for a squad that produces 72.2 ppg.
Devon Saddler scored a game-high 23 points, one of five players in double figures, as the Delaware Blue Hens defeated the Drexel Dragons by double digits in CAA action at the Daskalakis Center. Saddler, who shot 9-of-14 from the floor, accounted for eight rebounds and seven assists as well for the Blue Hens. Jarvis Threatt came up an assist shy of a double-double as he tallied 18 points, Marvin King-Davis delivered 15, Davon Usher 12 points and Carl Baptiste 10 for the visitors. Delaware forced only four turnovers, but countered by winning the battle on the boards, 44-27.
The leading scorer in five straight outings for the Hens, Saddler is now putting up 21.8 ppg, but the player to keep an eye on continues to be Threatt who is posting not just 17.7 ppg, but has also handed out 104 assists and made 43 steals to lead Delaware in those two categories. It doesn't hurt that Threatt is also very strong on the glass with almost six rebounds per contest, helping to wipe away the fact that he is shooting just 38.9 percent from the field at the moment.
One of the top scoring teams in the country with 81.1 ppg, when Delaware has all the parts in place there are few squads in the CAA that can keep pace.
