GAME NOTES: Longtime instate rivals will battle it out at Kaplan Arena on Wednesday night when the Richmond Spiders take on the William & Mary Tribe in a non-conference brawl.
Richmond is riding a three-game win streak into this contest after dispatching of another instate foe on Saturday with a 68-53 victory over James Madison. The Spiders winning streak has lifted them to a 6-2 overall mark. Up next for the Spiders is a road test against Wake Forest.
Also on a three-game win streak is the Tribe, which escaped with an 84-79 triumph in overtime at Howard on Saturday. William & Mary's run of wins has lifted it above .500 (4-3) on the year. In its three prior home games William & Mary has earned two victories and a single loss. William & Mary gets a shot at Wofford next.
There is quite a bit of history between these squads, with Wednesday marking the 200th all-time meeting. The series has been a competitive one, with Richmond holding a 102-97 edge. The Spiders won last year's meeting by a final of 86-78 for its third straight win over the Tribe.
Five players scored in double figures during Richmond's win over James Madison. The Spiders' scoring wasn't the story though as they held the Dukes to just 30.9 percent shooting, including a 0-of-16 showing from beyond the arc. The strong defense allowed the Spiders to overcome a 42-32 deficit on the boards.
The defensive end has been where the Spiders have found the most success this season. On the year, Richmond is allowing only 63.6 points per game on 38.6 percent shooting, ranking among the top 50 teams in the country in each category. The Spiders are only shooting at a 43-percent clip themselves. Cedrick Lindsay (17.8 ppg, 4.4 apg) leads the charge as the team's top scorer as well as the team's leader in assists. Lindsay registered 14 points and nine assists in the win over James Madison. Terry Allen (11.4 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa (7.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.0 bpg) team up on the interior and Kendall Anthony (10.2 ppg) helps Lindsay on the perimeter.
William & Mary led for nearly the entirety of regulation against Howard but never managed to take a double-digit lead. By allowing Howard to stay close the Tribe found themselves trailing in the final minute, but Marcus Thornton hit a jumper with less than 20 seconds to play to force overtime. In the extra session, the Tribe hit 3-of-6 field goal attempts and 6-of-11 from the charity stripe to take the win.
The Tribe has enjoyed more success on the offensive end than their counterparts in this matchup. On the year, the Tribe are shooting 47.7 percent from the floor and scoring better than 76 points per game. Unlike the Spiders, stopping teams has not come as easy. William & Mary is letting up 73.7 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting to its opponents. Thornton (19 ppg) is the most productive scoring threat for the Tribe, who has three players in double figures. Tim Rusthoven (14.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) is another strong scorer in the starting lineup while Omar Prewitt (15.9 ppg) provides a real spark off the bench. Prewitt was extremely effective against Howard, with 24 points in 34 minutes as a reserve.
Thornton gives the Tribe a chance on most nights with his ability to fill up the basket. However, the Tribe will be hard pressed to contend with the Spiders up front. Richmond will be the team to come out of this game with its win streak intact.
