GAMES NOTES: After posting consecutive victories for the first time since December the Wofford Terriers will take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in Southern Conference action at the Ramsey Center.
Wofford finished up a three-game homestand with a 59-50 victory over UNC Greensboro on Saturday. That win followed up a 60-50 triumph over Elon for the Terriers who last had back-to-back wins when they topped Jacksonville and Xavier in mid-December. Wofford had lost six of the previous seven games before the recent streak and is just 10-15 on the season and 4-8 in SoCon play. This is the first of four road games the Terriers will play in their next five contests.
With a 71-62 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday, West Carolina put an end to a four-game losing streak. Streaks of losses have plagued the Catamounts this season as they are just 9-15 overall, while having suffered three streaks of three losses or more. Western Carolina has been better than Wofford in league play by splitting its 12 SoCon bouts, but the team has also split its eight home tests. The Catamounts hit the road in their next two games against UNC Greensboro and Elon before playing the last three games of the regular season at the Ramsey Center.
This is the first and only meeting of the season between these squads that have matched up 43 times previously. Western Carolina leads the all-time series 24-19.
Spencer Collins scored a game-high 20 points and Karl Cochran hung up a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead Wofford over UNC Greensboro. The Terriers shot just 38.2 percent from the floor in the game but held the Spartans to a 32.1 field goal percentage.
Cochran (15.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Collins (12.8 ppg) have been the most productive scorers on the roster for Wofford though neither has been particularly efficient as each puts in less than 40 percent from the field. Lee Skinner (10.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg) adds some scoring to go with his team-best rebounding efforts. The Terriers don't have much punch from there though with no other player scoring more than five points per game. Hampered by a lack of scoring options the Terriers are last in the conference in both scoring (59.0 ppg) and field-goal percentage (.391).
Western Carolina shot 52.7 percent from the floor, including a 6-of-14 effort from beyond the arc, while holding Georgia Southern to 36 percent shooting on Saturday. The Catamounts had a 36-22 advantage on points in the paint and a 37-29 edge in rebounds.
In comparison to Wofford, Western Carolina has been able to muster up much better showings on offense. The Catamounts are putting in just under 70 points per game, connecting on 44.1 percent of their shots from the floor. However, the Catamounts have been letting up very similar numbers to opponents who score 70.2 points per game on 43.9 percent shooting. Trey Sumler (17.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.8 apg) leads a squad that features four players scoring in double figures. Sumler is also the second leading scorer in the conference and among the top five in assists as well. Tawaski King (11.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg), Brandon Boggs (10.5 ppg) and Tom Tankelewicz (10.0 ppg) are solid scoring options as well.
With Sumler on the floor Western Carolina has the best offensive option in this contest. The Catamounts also have better scorers surrounding Sumler, which should lead to a Western Carolina win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Western Carolina 70, Wofford 64
