GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans will try to climb out of the league's cellar as they host the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a Southern Conference tilt at Greensboro Coliseum.
Sunday's game marks the 40th meeting all-time between UNCG and Appalachian State on the hardwood. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series by an 18-21 margin and the two teams have split the last six meetings. Last year, each side defended its home court successfully before UNCG eliminated the Mountaineers from the SoCon Tournament with a 65-55 victory in Asheville.
Appalachian State lost for the second time in three games on Thursday as it was defeated, 61-58, at Elon after blowing a three-point lead in the final 1:11. Jay Canty netted 17 points and nine rebounds, and Nathan Healy scored 12 for the Mountaineers as they dropped to 11-14 on the season. A win would put Appalachian State in a tie for third place in the North Division standings with Western Carolina, but it will have to overcome its 3-11 mark in true away games to catch the Catamounts.
In its loss to Elon, Appalachian State went 3-of-16 from 3-point range and dealt out only seven assists to 11 turnovers. Four players are averaging 9.8 points per game or better for the Mountaineers this season, led by Healy with 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per tilt. The senior forward is shooting a solid 50.4 percent from the floor and 41.5 percent from beyond the arc (44-of-106), as he leads the team in 3-pointers made and in rebounding. Canty (14.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg), Tevin Baskin (10.1 ppg) and Tab Hamilton (9.8 ppg) comprise the rest of Appalachian State's unit of key contributors.
As for the hosts, UNCG has dropped four of its last five to fall to the bottom of the SoCon North Division standings. The Spartans wrapped up a three-game road swing last Saturday with a 59-50 setback at Wofford before returning home to drop a 70-68 decision to Western Carolina on Thursday. Derrell Armstrong had 18 points against the Catamounts while Trevis Simpson scored 15 with eight rebounds and David Williams had 10 points for the Spartans, who fell to 6-7 at home with the loss.
The Spartans boast the SoCon's leading scorer in Simpson. The junior swingman is averaging 19.7 ppg with 49 makes registered from beyond the arc and he also helps out on the boards with 4.4 per contest. Armstrong is next in line with 14.7 ppg, followed by Kayel Locke with 10.3 ppg. In the loss to WCU, the Spartans were outrebounded, 41-30, and also outscored in the paint, 19-5.
UNCG may own an unimpressive resume to this point, but it has battled consistently and came up just short in a handful of its setbacks. The Spartans are a very capable team offensively, which will put pressure on Healy and company to remain efficient.
