GAMES NOTES: Looking to bounce back from a tough loss last time out, the Arizona State Sun Devils visit the Utah Utes in a Pac-12 Conference conflict at the Huntsman Center on Wednesday night.
For the second time in the last three games, Arizona State was defeated in a 62-59 decision at home to Stanford on Saturday. The Sun Devils hadn't lost a game all season at home to a Pac-12 team before the loss. Arizona State is still having a strong season with a mark of 18-6 overall and a decent 7-5 ledger against league foes. In five previous road games Arizona State is just 3-2. The Sun Devils remain away from Tempe next time out against Colorado as they play four of their final six games on the road.
Utah was taken down, 73-64, by No. 23 Oregon on Saturday. It was the fourth loss in the last five games for the Utes, who are in a three-way tie for last place in the Pac-12 with Oregon State and Washington State with a record of 2-9 against league foes. Utah also owns the worst overall record among Pac-12 teams (10-13), which includes an 8-6 mark at the Huntsman Center. Utah will again play host on Sunday against No. 9 Arizona.
When these teams met earlier this season Arizona State edged out Utah, 55-54, for its second straight win in the series. Utah now holds a 26-18 advantage all-time.
Arizona State trailed by as many as 16 points against Stanford and a late rally came up short in the loss on Saturday. The Sun Devils hit only 34.4 percent of their field goal attempts in the contest but did do a good job in holding onto the ball with just eight turnovers.
In the losing effort Carrick Felix (14.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg) showed his ability as he posted his sixth double-double against Pac-12 competition and the ninth overall this season. Felix had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Superstar freshman Jahii Carson (17.9 ppg, 5.1 apg) also dropped in 15 points as he remains the highest-scoring freshman in the conference. Carson is also the top passer among conference freshman and the second best overall in the league. Evan Gordon (11.3 ppg) rounds out the double-figure scorers for Arizona State, while Jordan Bachynski (9.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 3.8 bpg) has been solid in the paint. However, Bachynski has begun to fall off on defense with just three blocks in the last three games after he had at least three in seven of the previous eight contests.
Utah came out hot against Oregon but it wouldn't last. After getting 57.1 percent of their shots to fall and going into halftime leading 30-22, the Utes cooled to 41.4 percent in the second half, getting outscored 22-7 from the free-throw line.
Despite shooting a solid 45 percent from the field this season, Utah is still among the lowest scoring teams in the Pac-12. The Utes put in only 65 points per game, which is better than only Washington State. Utah is also second worst in rebounding (35.3 pg). The Utes have had some success on defense, as they hold teams to 62.3 points per game on 38.5 percent shooting. Jarred DuBois (12.2 ppg) is the top scoring threat, but in the loss to Oregon, Jason Washburn (11.0 ppg, 6.6 rpg) took on that role by netting a team-high 20 points. Jordan Loveridge (12.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg) added 14 points against Oregon.
The success the Utes have had on defense has forced teams to play at their tempo. Arizona State isn't a team that plays extremely well in slow contests but as long as Carson and Felix keep up their high level of play, the Sun Devils can expect a win.
