GAME NOTES: The Dayton Flyers turn their attention to the Wildcats of Weber State, as the two squads are set to tip it off in a non-conference tilt at UD Arena.
Weber State is coming off a 65-55 setback at Utah State on Saturday. This is the last stop of a three-game road trip for the Wildcats, who are hoping to avoid an 0-3 trip. Following this contest, they'll return to Ogden for a three-game homestand.
Dayton has won three in a row to move to 4-1 on the young season. Most recently, the Flyers notched a 66-58 win over Manhattan this past Saturday to kick off a stretch that will see them play seven of eight at home. Their only loss to date was a 10-point setback to Colorado in the Charleston Classic.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs. In fact, Weber State has played only two previous games in the state of Ohio in its history.
Weber State hung tough with Utah State throughout much of regulation, but the Aggies broke a 53-53 tie by closing out regulation with a 12-2 run. The Wildcats shot just 34 percent from the floor in the game, and that included a disastrous 6-of-24 effort in the second half (.240). The Wildcats also did not help themselves at the free-throw line, where they made only 16-of-29 attempts (.552) for the game. Utah State owned the boards, holding a 43-30 rebounding advantage. Davion Berry was the only Weber State player in double figures, finishing with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting (0-of-6 from 3-point range). Berry, who sat out last season after transferring from Division II school Cal State Monterey Bay where he was a All-American, leads the team and ranks second in the Big Sky Conference with 16.3 ppg through three games. He has paced the team in scoring in all three games.
Leading the way for Dayton is senior guard Kevin Dillard, a preseason All- Atlantic 10 pick who has scored in double figures in each game this season. Dillard is averaging 15.2 points and 5.3 assists per game, while fellow guard Vee Sanford is tallying 13.0 ppg. That backcourt duo combined for 39 points on 13-of-19 shooting in the win over Manhattan, as Dillard scored 20 and Sanford finished with a career-high 19 points. Devin Oliver contributed his first career double-double, as he scored 10 points and matched a personal-best with 12 rebounds. The Flyers committed 19 turnovers for the game, but they forced Manhattan into 25 and held a key 24-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Dayton shot 52.4 percent from the floor but only 56.7 percent from the foul line, although Dillard took charge with his second consecutive 20-point game. Through five games, UD is averaging 71.4 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the floor and an impressive 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Berry has been a welcome addition for the Wildcats. However, he'll need some more help from his supporting cast if the 'Cats hope to match Dayton's backcourt production. Expect the Flyers to prevail at home thanks to their superior outside shooting range.
