NCAA Game Summary - Michigan at Michigan State

(Sunday, February 5th)

Final Score: (9) Michigan State 64, (23) Michigan 54

East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Draymond Green had 14 points and 16 rebounds, as No. 9 Michigan State earned a convincing 64-54 win over No. 23 Michigan on Sunday.

Keith Appling and Branden Dawson both added 10 points for the Spartans (18-5, 7-3 Big Ten), who have won three of four since a January 17 loss to Michigan.

Zack Novak scored 14 points to pace the Wolverines (17-7, 7-4). They were coming off of Wednesday's win over Indiana, but have dropped two of three overall. Jordan Morgan and Trey Burke both had 11 points while leading scorer Tim Hardaway Jr. finished with just four points on 1-of-10 shooting.

"They were more of a team than us, especially down the stretch," said Burke.

Earlier this season, the Spartans nearly overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half only to fall to the Wolverines, 60-59. On Sunday, they played the front runners, building an early 10-point lead, and closed strong to ensure a measure of revenge.

Up 30-22 at the break, Michigan State scored four straight out of the locker room, extending the advantage to 12 with jumpers by Green and Adreian Payne.

Michigan made it a nine-point game, 49-40, on a Burke free throw with under seven minutes to go, but the Spartans answered with an 8-0 run to pull away. Appling ignited the burst with a layup and added a free throw before finding Brandon Wood for the capping three-pointer with 2:47 remaining.

Evan Smotrycz responded with a trey on the other end, but the Spartans maintained their double-digit edge for the remainder of the contest.

Their halftime lead was made possible by an early 14-4 surge, which turned a 5-5 tie into a 10-point advantage. Green, Dawson and Wood all had four points during the run and Adreian Payne sealed it with a layup.

"Losing in general hurts, especially losing to your arch rival," said Appling. "We just wanted to come out today and make sure that we didn't have to worry about having that feeling after the game."
