GAME NOTES: The regular season draws to a close for a couple of Colonial Athletic Association programs on Saturday night, as the Drexel Dragons host the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington at the Daskalakis Center.
Both of these teams are in the bottom half of the CAA standings entering the weekend, with Drexel standing at 8-9 and the Seahawks showing a 5-12 mark. UNCW has had a tough time on the road this season with just one victory in 15 chances, so they are cautiously optimistic about this trip to the Keystone State.
Earlier this week the Seahawks suffered a narrow 73-72 loss to William & Mary at home, which means the team has bowed in three straight and five of the last six outings overall.
Meanwhile, the Dragons played a close game of their own two nights ago when they slipped by Old Dominion on the road, 81-77. The victory snapped a two- game slide for a Drexel team which has not won consecutive games now in more than a month.
In terms of the all-time series, the Seahawks own a 12-8 advantage, although the Dragons are the ones who captured a 59-47 decision in the most recent meeting almost a year ago to the very day (March 3, 2012).
Trailing by six points with under 20 seconds to play on Wednesday night, the Seahawks certainly made things interesting before losing by a single point following a successful free throw by W&M with 0.4 seconds left. Keith Rendleman accounted for a game-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Freddie Jackson and Chris Dixon with 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the hosts.
As the only player to have started every game for the Seahawks this season, it only makes sense that Rendleman is also the top scorer for the group with 16.8 ppg, stemming from his 53.3 percent accuracy from the floor. Also the top man on the glass with 10.5 rpg, Rendleman has his hands on the ball more than most, but that doesn't always work in his favor since he is shooting just 60.3 percent at the free-throw line. Dixon checks in with another 10.0 ppg and is tops with 92 assists, but still the team is being outscored by almost seven points per contest.
Damion Lee registered a double-double with a career-high 34 points and 10 rebounds as the Dragons held off Old Dominion in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Constant Convocation Center two nights ago. Lee ended up shooting not only 11-of-14 from the floor on the night, he sank all but one of his eight 3-point tries for the Dragons. Also scoring in double figures for Drexel were Frantz Massenat and Derrick Thomas with 22 and 13 points, respectively, with each also handing out six assists. Drexel finished the night shooting an impressive 14-of-23 (.609) behind the 3-point line.
Lee (17.6 ppg) leads the team in scoring on the season, thanks in large part to his 59-of-161 (.366) shooting beyond the arc where he has made 16 more baskets than any one of his teammates, even though he missed four games early on. Massenat checks in with another 14.8 ppg and is also first on the roster with 124 assists as he's the only one to start every contest for a Drexel team that lost Chris Fouch (16.7 ppg) just weeks into the season with an injury.
Chances are the Dragons won't be having as much success out on the perimeter as they did on Thursday night, but still the hosts should be able to come away with the win against a lackluster UNCW group.
