GAME NOTES: Fresh off an upset victory, the Iowa State Cyclones will try to build upon that momentum when they take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a Big 12 Conference clash at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Wednesday night.
Iowa State hosted then-11th-ranked Kansas State last Saturday and came away with a 73-67 victory for its four win in its last five games to move to 14-5 and 4-2 in conference play. The triumph allowed the Cyclones to stay perfect at home this season, but they haven't fared as well on the road, losing four of six contests.
Oklahoma State spent much of the first two months of the season in the Top-25 thanks to a 10-1 start, but it has been much more up and down in recent weeks, suffering four losses in its last seven games. The Cowboys hosted West Virginia last Saturday and came away with an 80-66 win to improve to 10-1 in Stillwater this season.
Oklahoma State has beaten Iowa State in five of the last six meetings to take a 62-53 lead in the all-time series.
The Cyclones were able to outlast K-State the last time out by shooting 48.1 percent from the field. Eleven of those makes came from beyond the arc, which marked the ninth time this season they have drained double-digit 3-pointers, and they have gone 8-1 in those games. Will Clyburn led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a performance that helped earn him Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season. Georges Niang chipped in 15 points in the triumph, Tyrus McGee came off the bench to net 11 points, and Korie Lucious tallied 10 points and eight assists. Iowa State is used to putting up lofty scoring totals, as its 78.6 ppg is tied for 10th in the nation. It has six players scoring at least 8.8 ppg, paced by Clyburn (14.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg). Melvin Ejim is a mainstay in the ISU frontcourt, recording 10.6 ppg and 9.5 rpg while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. McGee (12.6 ppg) has drained 52 treys at a lofty 44.8 percent clip, while Lucious (10.2 ppg) ranks fourth in the league with 5.5 apg. Niang (11.1 ppg) and Chris Babb (8.8 ppg) round out a talented six-man rotation.
The Cowboys made easy work of WVU over the weekend by piecing together a stellar shooting night, as they made 25-of-52 from the field (including 10 3- pointers) and 20-of-25 from the foul line in the 14-point win. Phil Forte provided instant offense off the bench, shooting 6-of-11 from long range on his way to a career-high 26 points. Markel Brown also had a hot hand in the win, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor en route to 24 points, while Marcus Smart (13 points) and Philip Jurick (eight points, 12 rebounds) had noteworthy outings as well. Oklahoma State is a well-rounded squad, ranking fourth in the league in scoring offense (70.7 ppg) and second in scoring defense (58.3 ppg). Brown has been the team's most reliable scorer with 14.9 ppg, and while Le'Bryan Nash is nipping at his heels with 13.3 ppg, he has scored fewer than that in 10 of the last 12 games. Smart has put together an outstanding freshman campaign across the stat sheet with 13.2 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 4.5 apg, 2.7 spg and 0.9 bpg, and Forte is a strong sixth-man with 11.6 ppg.
Iowa State proved on Saturday that, on its home floor, it can compete with anyone, but venturing away from Ames has been a completely different story for the Cyclones. Despite Oklahoma State's spotty play recently, it can usually be counted on to perform well at home.
