Ghana falls to Egypt but clinches World Cup berth

Cairo, Egypt (SportsNetwork.com) - Amr Zaki and Mohamed Gedo scored to give Egypt a 2-1 second-leg win over Ghana in their World Cup playoff tie at Cairo International Stadium, but it wasn't enough as Ghana still advanced to next summer's event in Brazil by virtue of a 7-3 aggregate triumph.

After suffering a disappointing 6-1 first-leg loss on Oct. 15. Egypt knew it would have to start quickly on Tuesday to have any chance to overturn a sizable deficit.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 25th minute through Zaki's goal and added a second goal through Gedo in the 83rd minute to make it a 6-3 aggregate score, but Kevin-Prince Boateng put the final nail in Egypt's coffin when he scored in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere in African qualifying on Tuesday, after dropping a 3-2 result in the opening leg, Algeria earned a 1-0 win over Burkina Faso via a 48th-minute goal from Madjid Bougherra. The tie finished 3-3 on aggregate, but Algeria claimed the World Cup berth via the away goals tiebreaker.
