Uruguay hammers Jordan in first leg of playoff

Amman, Jordan (SportsNetwork.com) - Uruguay took a big step toward securing its place in Brazil at next summer's World Cup with a 5-0 thrashing of Jordan on Wednesday in the first leg of their intercontinental playoff.

Goals from Maxi Pereira and Christian Stuani handed Uruguay a 2-0 lead at halftime, while Nicolas Lodeiro, Cristian Rodriguez and Edinson Cavani each added another goal after the break to leave Jordan with a mountain to climb in the second leg in Uruguay next Wednesday.

It took Uruguay a little while to get going, but the South Americans snatched the lead in the 22nd minute when Pereira scored on the rebound after Cavani's header was saved by goalkeeper Mohamad Shatnawi.

Stuani scored shortly before halftime to double the advantage after he was picked out at the back post by a nice ball from Lodeiro.

Lodeiro found the net himself 20 minutes from time when he scored from the edge of the penalty area, putting Uruguay in firm control.

Rodriguez padded the advantage eight minutes later when he beat Shatnawi with a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area and Cavani capped off the dominating victory in stoppage time with a well-struck free kick.
