SKC trounces Columbus to climb atop the East

Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Sporting Kansas City moved to the top of the Eastern Conference table on Saturday thanks to a comfortable 3-0 defeat of the Columbus Crew at Sporting Park.

The wins sees Kansas City (13-9-6) move into the top spot for at least a day. The Montreal Impact and Red Bull New York can climb back level with Sporting on 45 points with wins over the New England Revolution and Houston Dynamo, respectively, on Sunday.

Columbus (9-14-5) drops its 14th match of the season and first under the guidance of interim head coach Brian Bliss as the club remains on 32 points.

Sporting was in front by the seventh minute after Will Trapp's mistimed challenge on Benny Feilhaber yielded a penalty kick, which Claudio Bieler converted with great aplomb.

The home side's advantage was doubled just before halftime when Soony Saad capped a counterattack in the 41st minute by cutting the ball inside and lashing a right-footed blast into the upper corner.

Sporting put the match to bed in the 55th minute when Oriol Rosell's cross was flicked on by C.J. Sapong and past the on-rushing Matt Lampson.
