Destro's hat trick powers Roma past Cagliari

Cagliari, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - A hat trick from Mattia Destro helped Roma close to within five points of Serie A leaders Juventus on Sunday as the capital side claimed a 3-1 win at Cagliari.

Destro put Roma in front after 32 minutes, and he doubled his tally in the 56th before completing his hat trick 17 minutes from time.

Cagliari's only response was a penalty kick from Mauricio Pinilla in the 89th minute as his team remains seven points clear of the relegation places.

Juventus will have a chance to restore its eight-point lead at the top of the table on Monday with a win over Livorno.

Cagliari nearly snatched the lead in the 23rd minute when a free kick from Nene clipped the crossbar, but the hosts fell behind nine minutes later.

Gervinho started the move and Destro made no mistake with his finish, giving him 11 goals in Serie A this term.

Former Cagliari man Radja Nainggolan had a hand in Destro's second goal in the 56th minute when delivered a cross that Destro slotted past goalkeeper Vlada Avramov.

The hat trick was completed in the 73rd when Alessandro Florenzi's pass was swept home by Destro, putting the result beyond reach for Cagliari, which managed to pull a goal back in the 89th through Pinilla, who drew a foul inside the penalty area and converted the subsequent spot kick.

Third-place Napoli fell 12 points back of Roma after sustaining a 1-0 defeat at Parma with Marco Parolo's goal in the 55th minute providing the difference.

Fiorentina remains in fourth place after a 2-1 win over Udinese courtesy of goals from Juan Cuadrado and Gonzalo Rodriguez, moving the club five points clear of fifth-place Inter Milan.

Lazio downed Sampdoria, 2-0, with goals from Antonio Candreva and Senad Lulic, Nicola Sansone scored a goal in each half as Sassuolo moved to within three points of safety with a 2-0 triumph over Atalanta and Torino came from a goal down in the final 11 minutes to notch a 2-1 win at Catania with Ciro Immobile scoring the winner in the 83rd minute.
