Roma edges Fiorentina to snap winless run

Rome, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Roma ended a four-game winless run on Sunday by earning a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina at the Stadio Olimpico.

Rudi Garcia's men had relinquished first place in the Italian top flight following a run of four successive draws, but the club got back in the win column by claiming maximum points against a Fiorentina side that has now dropped two of its last three league matches.

Maicon got the home side off the mark seven minutes into the affair, converting a set-up from Alessandro Florenzi.

Juan Vargas equalized in the 29th minute to send the two sides into the halftime interval level at a goal apiece, but Roma answered on the other side of the break when Mattia Destro fired home from Gervinho's corner kick in the 67th minute.

Roma had Miralem Pjanic sent off after the striker picked up a second yellow card in the 88th minute, but the club managed to hold off Fiorentina to improve to 37 points on the season, 10 points ahead of Vincenzo Montella's men.

Hellas Verona continued its fine season by snapping a three-game slide with a 2-1 victory over Atalanta at the Stadio M.A. Bentegodi. The home side was behind by halftime, but Gomez and Jorginho Frello produced a goal apiece in the final eight minutes of play to lift Hellas Verona to 25 points on the season.

Cagliari came from behind in a 2-1 defeat of 10-man Genoa as Marco Sau netted a second-half brace for the victors, and Sampdoria went unbeaten in its last three Serie A outings with a 2-0 defeat of Catania.

Also on Sunday, Cyril Thereau handed Chievo a 1-0 win at Sassuolo, Kamil Glik notched the lone goal in Torino's 1-0 defeat of Lazio and Rodrigo Palacio and Nicola Sansone traded braces in Inter Milan's thrilling 3-3 draw with Parma.
