Southampton makes record Wanyama signing

Southampton, England (Sports Network) - Southampton announced Thursday that club has signed Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama from Scottish Premier League side Celtic for a record fee of $19 million.

Wanyama has signed a four-year contract with the Saints, surpassing the club's former record transfer fee that it paid for Gaston Ramirez last year. The fee is also $4.5 million more than Spartak Moscow's purchase of Aiden McGeady three years ago, making Wanyama the most expensive export from Scotland's top flight.

"I am very pleased to have secured the signing of Victor because we are a big admirer of his talents and he will fit in well to the team here at Southampton," Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino said in statement.

Wanyama, 22, had been with Celtic for two years after arriving from Belgian club Beerschot. He was relatively unknown upon his arrival at Parkhead but became a fan-favorite after choosing the number 67 jersey in appreciation of the Hoops' European Cup triumph in 1967.
