NFL Game Summary - Washington at Philadelphia
(Sunday, January 1st)
Final Score: Philadelphia 34, Washington 10
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Michael Vick threw for 335 yards with three touchdowns and an interception and DeSean Jackson hauled in a 62-yard score in the fourth quarter as Philadelphia took down Washington, 34-10, in the regular season finale for both teams.
Vick completed just two of his first eight throws, but finished the contest 24-of-39 passing for the Eagles (8-8), who closed the season with four straight wins.
It's the first time since 2007 and just the fourth instance during Andy Reid's tenure that Philadelphia failed to qualify for the postseason.
"I think we have a lot of soul searching to do, a lot of thinking to do," Vick said of the team's upcoming offseason.
Jeremy Maclin caught eight balls for 105 yards, Brent Celek had six receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown and Jackson finished with 86 yards on four catches.
LeSean McCoy was inactive for the finale due to an ankle injury he suffered last Saturday against the Cowboys. Dion Lewis got the bulk of the carries and finished with 58 yards and a score, although most of it came in the fourth quarter.
Evan Royster ran for 113 yards and Rex Grossman completed 22-of-45 passes for 256 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Washington (5-11), which closed the year losing 10 of its last 12 games following a promising 3-0 start.
Missed opportunities on special teams plagued the Redskins in the opening half, but they found themselves down just 10-0 at the break.
Washington took its opening possession of the second half 80 yards in eight plays. Helu took a screen pass 47 yards for a touchdown to cap the drive and bring Washington within just three.
Philadelphia had a 1st-and-goal at the six-yard line on its ensuing possession, but was unable to punch the ball into the end zone. Alex Henery booted through a 20-yard chip shot to increase the Eagles' lead to 13-7 with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter.
Brandon Banks moved the chains on 3rd-and-4 with a 10-yard reception on Washington's next drive to put the ball at the Philadelphia 13-yard line. The Redskins drive stalled, though, and Gano split the uprights from 27 yards out to make it a 13-10 game early in the fourth quarter.
Philadelphia scored the final three touchdowns of the game to turn it into a rout.
"For three quarters we had a chance, but when you go 0-for-3 in the red zone you can't win games," Redskins head coach Mike Shannahan said.
The Eagles answered quickly as Vick found Jackson on the third play of Philadelphia's ensuing series for a 62-yard TD reception. On the touchdown, Vick took a deep drop off a play-action fake and hit Jackson in stride on a deep double move down the middle of the field.
Celek's four-yard score on a tight-end screen gave the Eagles a 27-10 lead and Lewis added a nine-yard TD run with 1:56 remaining to account for the final margin.
Henery split the uprights from 35 yards out to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage early in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Grossman's pass intended for Anthony Armstrong was intercepted by Nate Allen. On the play, the ball ballooned high off the helmet of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and into the waiting arms of Allen. But the Eagles went three-and-out following the turnover.
The Redskins got the running game going on their next possession. Royster ran for 44 yards on four carries to set up the Redskins for a 36-yard field goal attempt, but Gano's kick was blocked by Derek Landri.
Chad Hall capped an eight-play, 65-yard touchdown drive with a seven-yard score to give the Eagles a 10-0 advantage with 1:44 to play in the opening half. Vick completed all six of his passes for 52 yards on the march.
Following a Washington punt, the Eagles regained possession at their own 35- yard line with 44 seconds left. But Brian Orakpo caught Vick from behind on the first play of the drive for a strip sack and Perry Riley recovered the ball for Washington at the Philadelphia 17-yard line with 35 seconds left.
Without a timeout at Washington's disposal, Jabar Gaffney caught an eight-yard pass over the middle, but was unable to get out of bounds. Gano did not get on the field in time to attempt a field goal and Philadelphia took a 10-0 lead into the locker room.
