National League Game Capsules
(Monday, June 17th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 5, Washington 4
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Domonic Brown smacked a game-winning
single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Philadelphia Phillies to
a 5-4 victory over the Washington Nationals Monday in the opener of a three-
game set at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies led 4-3 heading into the ninth,
but closer Jonathan Papelbon served up a two-out, two-strike homer to Chad
Tracy to tie the game. The offense quickly picked up Papelbon (1-0) in the
bottom half, as Ben Revere ripped a leadoff single and moved to third two
batters later on Jimmy Rollins' base hit to left. After pinch-hitter Steven
Lerud fanned for the second out, Brown looped a 2-2 offering from Fernando
Abad (0-2) back up the middle to plate the deciding run. Ryan Howard went 3-
for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI, while Delmon Young added a two-run double
to help the Phillies snap a two-game slide. Jayson Werth, Ian Desmond and
Steve Lombardozzi each knocked in a run for the Nationals, who have dropped
three of their last four games.
Final Score: Cincinnati 4, Pittsburgh 1
Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Todd Frazier, Zack Cozart, Joey Votto and
Jay Bruce homered, as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-1,
to open a four-game series at Great American Ball Park. Mike Leake (7-3)
allowed six hits and a run over seven innings to win at home for the first
time since April 17 against the Phillies. Votto had two of the eight hits for
Cincinnati, which has won six of its last eight contests. Francisco Liriano
(5-3), who hadn't given up a homer all season, yielded a pair of long balls.
The left-hander was charged with five hits and had six strikeouts over six
innings for the Pirates, who started a nine-game road trip. Russell Martin
doubled in the lone Pittsburgh run. Votto reached second base in the bottom of
the third, but the Pirates kept it scoreless when Starling Marte made a diving
catch of a ball hit by Brandon Phillips to left field to cap the inning.
Final Score: St. Louis 5, Chicago 2
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Yadier Molina went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a
run scored, and five Cardinals pitchers held the Chicago Cubs in check in St.
Louis' 5-2 victory over its NL Central rival at Busch Stadium. A cramp forced
Shelby Miller (8-4) out after five innings, but only after the right-hander
held the Cubs scoreless by allowing just two hits and two walks. Kevin
Siegrist, Seth Maness, Trevor Rosenthal and Edward Mujica closed out the win
in relief for the Cardinals, who had dropped two of three against the Marlins
over the weekend for their first series loss since April. Chicago has dropped
two straight following a three-game winning streak. Travis Wood (5-6) suffered
the loss Monday despite a quality start, as he was charged with four runs --
three earned -- on seven hits over seven frames. The Cubs trailed 4-0 entering
the eighth inning and finally got on the board on an RBI single by Nate
Schierholtz. Mujica stranded two in the frame, however, and the Cardinals
tacked on an insurance run in the bottom half on Allen Craig's sacrifice fly.
Mujica served up a solo homer to Darwin Barney in the ninth, but still picked
up his 20th save.
Final Score: Toronto 2, Colorado 0
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Maicer Izturis hit a two-run single in the
eighth inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 2-0 win over the Colorado
Rockies in the opener of a three-game set at Rogers Centre. Izturis finished
2-for-3 and also made a spectacular diving play in the fifth inning to get
Toronto out of a bases loaded jam. Josh Johnson worked 7 1/3 shutout innings,
scattering five hits and striking out 10 for the Blue Jays, who have won six
straight games. Brett Cecil (3-0) recorded the final two outs of the eighth to
earn the win and Casey Janssen notched his 15th save of the season. Jorge De
La Rosa carried a no-hitter over 5 1/3 innings. He allowed just one hit,
walked three and struck out four over seven frames. Matt Belisle (4-4) was
pegged with the loss for Colorado, which has dropped four of its last six
games.
Final Score: Miami 3, Arizona 2
Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Giancarlo Stanton recorded his eighth career
multi-homer game and provided the go-ahead run with a solo shot in the top of
the ninth inning to carry the Miami Marlins to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona
Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game set at Chase Field. Stanton has hit
safely in all seven games since missing six weeks due to a strained right
hamstring, going 11-for-28 with four homers, three doubles and 10 runs batted
in. Heath Bell (2-1) served up the difference-maker to Stanton to absorb the
loss. The stud Miami outfielder, who accounted for two of the Marlins' three
total hits, spoiled a superb outing from Patrick Corbin, who is still
searching for his elusive 10th win of the season. Corbin carried a no-hit bid
through five innings, but allowed a one-out Juan Pierre single and Stanton's
first homer, which tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Mike Dunn (2-1) tossed a
scoreless eighth to obtain the victory. Corbin lasted eight innings, allowing
two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out seven, but failed to earn
a decision in his third straight start. Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer and
drove in both Arizona runs. The Diamondbacks have dropped four straight and
seven of nine.
Final Score: San Diego 5. San Francisco 3 (13 innings)
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Andrew Cashner's pinch-hit bunt single in
the 13th inning scored the go-ahead run as the San Diego Padres edged the San
Francisco Giants, 5-3, on Monday. In the 13th, Alexi Amarista smacked a
leadoff double off of Jose Mijares (0-1) then moved to third on Chris
Denorfia's base hit that deflected off of Tony Abreu and landed in shallow
right field. Cashner, Tuesday's scheduled starter, followed with a perfect
bunt to the left side that allowed Amarista to score. Kyle Blanks singled two
batters later to load the bases before Yasmani Grandal worked a walk to force
in Denorfia. Gregor Blanco singled with one out in the bottom half, but
Huston Street was able to record the final two outs of the game to nail
down the win. It was Street's 14th save of the season.
