NCAA Game Summary - Lamar at Oklahoma State
(Saturday, September 14th)
Final Score: (12) Oklahoma State 59, Lamar 3
Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - With plenty of turmoil surrounding the
Oklahoma State football program, a non-conference clash with Lamar was just
what the doctor ordered for the 12th-ranked Cowboys.
Jeremy Smith rushed for three first-half touchdowns and Oklahoma State stifled
the Cardinals in a 59-3 rout on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Earlier this week, Sports Illustrated reported that several Oklahoma State
football players apparently received improper benefits dating back to 2001.
Although an NCAA investigation appears imminent, the Cowboys (3-0) were able
to maintain their focus on the field, racking up 26 first downs and 426 yards
of total offense en route to the victory.
J.W. Walsh completed 17-of-30 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown, and one
interception, while backup quarterback Clint Chelf threw for a score and
rushed for another in the win.
"We had good tempo going," Walsh said. "The guys up front were blocking real
hard, and the running backs were running really hard. We were able to wear
them down up front."
Lamar signal-caller Caleb Berry finished 18-of-38 passing for 114 yards and
Kade Harrington tallied 66 yards on 20 carries for the Cardinals (1-2), who
have lost two straight games since opening the season with a 75-0 rout of
Oklahoma Panhandle State.
"It was a great experience overall," Berry said of facing Oklahoma State. "We
might not have executed like we wanted to on offense, but our guys played hard
and with heart and I'm proud of them."
After Lamar turned the ball over on downs on its opening touch of the game,
Walsh guided the Cowboys on a 10-play, 57-yard march that Desmond Roland
capped with a 2-yard TD run to make it 7-0 less than six minutes in.
Smith surged in from four yards out on Oklahoma State's next possession before
adding a 1-yard TD plunge late in the first to push the margin to 21-0.
Ben Grogan extended the Cowboys' lead with a 39-yard field goal early in the
second before Smith capped his stellar first half with another 1-yard
touchdown run to make it 31-0 with 3:34 left in the second.
Justin Stout drilled a 44-yard field in the waning seconds of the half to send
Lamar into the break facing a 31-3 deficit.
The Cowboys forced the Cardinals to punt on their first touch of the second
half and Josh Stewart returned the kick 67 yards for a score to make it 38-3
just over two minutes into the third.
After a three-and-out from Lamar, Walsh hooked up with Jackson for a 2-yard
touchdown before Chelf took over under center and capped a 4-play, 21-yard
series with an 8-yard TD surge to make it 52-3 with 6:01 left in the third.
Chelf added a 16-yard scoring strike to Blake Webb midway through the fourth
to account for the final margin.
Chelf completed all six of his passes for 90 yards while rushing three times
for 23 yards ... Smith finished with 40 yards on 10 carries ... Lamar's Reggie
Begelton caught a game-high 10 passes for 48 yards ... Lamar compiled 13 first
downs and 245 yards of total offense.
