Blue Bombers acquire QB Willy; sign him to extension
Winnipeg, Manitoba (SportsNetwork.com) - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers acquired quarterback Drew Willy from the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for wide receiver Jade Etienne on Thursday.
Upon acquisition, the Blue Bombers signed Willy to a contract extension. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-3 Willy has spent the past two seasons as the Riders' backup quarterback, and has gone 2-2 as a starter during that time. In two starts this past season, Willy completed 32-of-52 attempts for 474 yards and four touchdowns.
"Drew is a quarterback we have always thought had very high potential in this league," said Bombers' general manager Kyle Walters. "He immediately upgrades us at the position, and we really look forward to him being a part of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers moving forward."
Willy, who played collegiately at the University of Buffalo, has thrown for 1,182 yards on 101-of-147 passing with nine touchdowns in his two seasons in the CFL.
Etienne was a first round draft pick of the Blue Bombers in the 2011 Draft, and after three CFL seasons, has caught 20 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns.
