Valparaiso, IN (Sports Network) - Miles Dixon netted 14 points, including the
game-winning jumper in the waning seconds, as the third-seeded Wright State
Raiders upset the second-seeded Detroit Titans, 56-54, in the semifinal round
of the Horizon League Tournament at the Athletics-Recreation Center.
Dixon shot 6-of-8 from the field off the bench and added three steals for
Wright State (21-11), which will play in Tuesday's championship game against
Valparaiso. Jerran Young added 12 points and six rebounds for the Raiders.
Jason Calliste led Detroit (20-12) with 17 points and five assists, while Evan
Bruinsma put up 15 points. Ray McCallum, the Horizon League Player of the
Year, had just five points on 1-of-7 from the field.
Although Wright State outshot Detroit from the field in the first half, 57.9
percent to 41.7 percent, the Titans attempted five more field goals than the
Raiders and shot 7-of-8 from the foul line, as the teams went into
intermission tied at 29-29.
The game remained tight down the stretch, with a total of 14 ties and nine
lead changes on the day. With Detroit down three with just over a minute
remaining, Calliste drained a 3-pointer to tie the contest. After empty
possessions by both sides, Wright State had possession with time winding down,
which ultimately led to Dixon's last-second bucket.
Wright State overcame a game-high 17 turnovers by winning the rebounding
