UC Irvine rallies past Texas in CWS opener

Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Rabago's tie-breaking RBI single highlighted an eighth-inning rally that lifted UC Irvine to a 3-1 triumph over Texas in the opening game of the 2014 College World Series.

The Anteaters scored three times in the eighth to overcome a 1-0 deficit and advance to a winner's bracket matchup, where they'll face the victor of Saturday's Louisville-Vanderbilt clash on Monday.

After mustering just four hits off Texas ace Nathan Thornhill through seven innings of play, UC Irvine finally broke out in the eighth. Adam Alcantara singled and was pushed to second on a bunt before Taylor Sparks laced a triple into the gap in left center to bring in the tying run.

Rabago then greeted reliever John Curtiss with a base hit up the middle to plate Sparks, with Jonathan Munoz adding a two-out RBI single later in the frame to extend the lead to 3-1.

Sparks finished 3-for-4, while Evan Brock held the Longhorns scoreless over the final 2 1/3 innings to record the win. Andrew Morales worked the first six for UC Irvine, yielding a run on six hits.

Collin Shaw went 2-for-3 for Texas, making its record 35th CWS appearance but first since 2011, and scored the Longhorns' lone run on Zane Gurwitz's bunt single in the second inning.

The Longhorns will square off against the Louisville-Vanderbilt loser on Monday.
