Kvitova beats Stosur to lift Czechs past Australia

Ostrava, Czech Republic (Sports Network) - Petra Kvitova clinched a Fed Cup quarterfinal win for the Czech Republic with a three-set victory over Australia's Samantha Stosur on Sunday.

Kvitova rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 triumph in the first reverse singles match, giving the Czechs an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five tie.

The two-time defending Fed Cup champs had opened a 2-0 edge on Saturday thanks to opening singles wins for Kvitova and Lucie Safarova. The Czechs have advanced to the semifinals for the fifth straight year and will next visit Italy in a rematch of last year's Fed Cup semifinals. Italy advanced Sunday with a 3-2 win over the United States.

Stosur had dropped her opening singles rubber on Saturday to Safarova, falling in a pair of tiebreaks, but on Sunday nearly kept the Aussies alive. After taking the first set in 27 minutes, she had a match point at 5-4 in the second.

Kvitova, however, saved it and fought back to win the tiebreak and force a third set. The 2011 Wimbledon champ then carried the momentum and opened a 5-0 lead in the decisive set, only to see the 2011 U.S. Open champ battle back by winning four straight games. Stosur finally wilted in the 10th game and had her serve broken for the sixth time.

The second reverse singles match was abandoned and only the doubles rubber was played to complete the tie. The Czechs also won that as Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka claimed a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) triumph over the Aussie duo of Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua to finish a 4-0 whitewash.
