Sandy, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - A 78th-minute goal from Ned Grabavoy and some
late goalkeeping heroics from Nick Rimando helped Real Salt Lake to a 1-0 win
over the Portland Timbers at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday.
Salt Lake is now unbeaten in its first seven games this season, while Portland
is still in search of its first victory through seven matches after finishing
on top of the Western Conference last term.
Rimando had a big hand in RSL claiming three points on Saturday as he came up
with a nice stop on Darlington Nagbe in the 19th minute to keep out the best
chance of the first half.
Things picked up after the break and Portland nearly found the opener in the
58th when Maximiliano Urruti cut inside from the left wing and hammered a shot
off the crossbar.
The home side was next to go close in the 73rd when Chris Wingert picked out
Javier Morales with a pass that the midfielder drilled off the post.
But Grabavoy broke the deadlock 12 minutes from time as he took a pass 30
yards from goal and dribbled to the edge of the penalty area before driving a
left-footed shot inside the right post that was just beyond the reach of
goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.
The Timbers pressed hard for an equalizer late in the match, but Rimando made
two huge saves to preserve the win, first denying Alvas Powell with a kick
save before tipping a shot from Gaston Fernandez past the post as it was
headed for the top corner.
