Frisco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Mauro Diaz netted a late winner at Toyota
Stadium on Saturday to give FC Dallas a 2-1 victory over the Portland Timbers,
the club's third win of the young season.
It was Diaz's second goal of the season and his first since the club's opening
match on March 8 as his 84th-minute strike on Saturday brings Dallas to 10
points through three games. The club, unbeaten under the guidance of new head
coach Oscar Pareja, sits atop the overall MLS table.
FC Dallas nearly took the lead when JeVaughn Watson met a cross in the 27th
minute only to see his header come back off the crossbar.
It would be one of Watson's final contributions to the match as he and
Portland's Michael Harrington were sent off five minutes before halftime for
their involvement in a minor scuffle.
Dallas was first to adjust to being reduced to 10 men as Blas Perez turned in
a header from close range in first-half stoppage time to give the home side
Portland managed to get on level terms in the 66th minute when Matt Hedges
deflected Maximiliano Urruti's pass into the back of the net, but Diaz struck
six minutes from time when he fired a shot on the turn past Andrew Weber at
the far post.
The Timbers, who finished the regular season last year at the top of the
Western Conference, have yet to win in 2014. Caleb Porter's side has lost two
straight and has managed just two points from its opening four matches.
