D.C. United moved four points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference on Sunday as second-half goals from Luis Silva and Eddie Johnson handed the club a 2-0 win over Red Bull New York at RFK Stadium.
New York had the better of the play in the first half and was unlucky not to take a lead into halftime. However, United responded after the break with Silva scoring in the 57th minute before Johnson netted his fifth goal of the campaign in stoppage time.
Bradley Wright-Phillips missed the left post by inches with a first-time shot after he was played into the penalty area by Thierry Henry, while the Englishman turned a header on goal from six yards in the 31st that was kept out by a sprawling save from goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who managed to tip the ball past the post.
