Genoa, Italy (Sports Network) - Gian Piero Gasperini has returned to Genoa to take over for Fabio Liverani, who was relieved of his duties as the club's manager.
Gasperini's first stint in charge of Genoa saw him help the club gain promotion to Serie A in his first season in 2006, while he led Genoa to a fifth-place finish in the 2008-09 season.
Genoa parted ways with Gasperini in November 2010, but the 55-year-old has now returned to help the club overcome a poor start that includes just one win in six Serie A matches.
Liverani gets his marching orders after just three months on the job having been promoted from youth team coach in June.
Genoa managed to avoid relegation last season with a 17th-place finish, which cost former boss Davide Ballardini his job.
Gasperini has also spent time with Inter Milan and Palermo and he returns to Genoa on a three-year contract.
