Inter hopes to regain form for Milan derby

Milan, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Inter Milan is eyeing a return to its early-season form as the club prepares for the first Milan derby of the season against AC Milan on Sunday.

Inter began the campaign with 14 points from its first six games, but has come off the boil since that time, claiming just three points from its four most recent matches, including a 4-2 defeat at Napoli last time out.

That recent slide has dropped Inter into fifth place, seven points behind third-place Napoli, and Walter Mazzarri's men will be determined to end their skid before it continues to see the club fall further down the table.

Despite the slump, Inter still resides nine points and five places above the Rossoneri, which has drawn four of its last five games in league play, and Inter president Erick Thohir is relishing the task on Sunday and not concerned by his side's form.

"I'm not worried by the team's results," Thohir said. "I trust the players. I think they're giving their best.

"This is one of the most important games of the year. I can't wait for it to arrive. I'm going to be at the stadium and certainly it would be beautiful to win it, but we must not underestimate Milan because they also have a good side."

Juventus has stretched its lead at the top of Serie A to five points and the club hits the road to face mid-table Atalanta on Sunday, while second-place Roma attempts to maintain its unbeaten record when the club hosts Catania.

Roma has drawn five of its last six games and sits just three points clear of Napoli, which travels to Cagliari on Saturday and has scored 11 goals combined in its last three fixtures.

Fiorentina rounds out the top four and the Viola visits Sassuolo, which sits one point clear of the relegation places.

Livorno is currently in the bottom three and hosts Udinese on Saturday with the two sides separated by four points.

Also on Sunday, Genoa invades Bologna, which is winless in its last six games, Lazio tangles with Hellas Verona, Parma meets Sampdoria and Chievo hits the road to face Torino.
