Hamonic gets 7-year deal from Islanders

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Islanders retained the services of restricted free-agent defenseman Travis Hamonic on Friday, agreeing to a seven-year contract.

No financial terms were revealed, but Newsday reported it is worth $27 million for the duration.

"We are excited to come to terms with an important part of our young core as we look to take the next step in becoming a perennial playoff contender," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said. "Travis has shown he is an elite defenseman in this league and we're thrilled that he'll be a part of the Islanders organization for seven more years."

The 22-year-old blueliner completed his third NHL campaign with three goals and 10 points over 48 regular-season games, adding one assist in a six-game first-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh.

In 183 career games, all with the Islanders, the Winnipeg native has collected 10 scores and 50 assists.
