Description: Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year on Saturday.
Insight: Kuechly followed up his Rookie of the Year in 2012 with an equally sensational sophomore campaign in 2013. In 16 games, the Boston College alum generated 156 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. With Kuechly anchoring the defense, Carolina won its division for the first time since 2008. Indianapolis linebacker Robert Mathis was probably just as deserving of this award but it's tough to argue with the voters choosing Kuechly.

Description: Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly had the most tackles in the NFL this season and it wasn't even close. After Kuechly's 164 tackles, the next highest total belonged to 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman with 149 tackles.
Insight: Kuechly's strong play was a huge reason why the Panthers were able to go from 28th in the NFL in total defense last season to 10th this season. The 21-year-old out of Boston College has a bright future ahead of him.
