Insight: It's only a minor procedure and he should be ready for the start of training camp in a couple months. Since making his debut with Buffalo in 2009, Byrd has 356 tackles, 22 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles. He signed a six-year deal with the Saints back in March.

Description: Contract talks have broken down between the Bills and safety Jairus Byrd. SOURCE: Associated Press
Insight: Buffalo has less than 24 hours to decide what to do with its franchise tag. If the tag is used on Byrd, the three-time Pro Bowler will earn $8.4 million in 2014. If not, he'll become a free agent. Byrd led the team with four interceptions in 2013 even after missing the first five games with plantar fasciitis.

Description: Bills free safety Jairus Byrd will make his season debut Sunday against the Bengals.
Insight: Byrd missed Buffalo's first five games while dealing with plantar fasciitis. Andy Dalton would be wise to avoid Byrd's side of the field on Sunday.

Description: Plantar fasciitis will keep All-Pro free safety Jairus Byrd out for a second straight week.
Insight: The Bills were gashed for 288 passing yards in Week 1 and it could be the same deal Sunday versus Cam Newton. No timetable has been given for Byrd's return.

Description: Updating a previous report, it appears that Bills All-Pro safety Jairus Byrd will not be able to play through plantar fasciitis.
Insight: At least not at first. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, he's doubtful for Sunday's game against New England. With Byrd out of the picture, Pats QB Tom Brady should have a field day in Week 1.

Insight: The tag is non-exclusive so this doesn't necessarily guarantee that Byrd will be back in Buffalo next season. The other 31 teams can still sign Byrd to an offer sheet, though Buffalo would be allowed to match any offer. We're guessing Byrd stays in Western New York after all is said and done.

Description: Bills second-year safety Jairus Byrd returned to practice on Saturday, but is still unsure whether or not he'll be on the field for the team's opener vs. Miami on Sept. 12.

Insight: Byrd underwent surgery in the offseason on a groin injury that forced the Bills to place him on injured reserve last December. The 23-year-old tied for the league lead with 10 INTs in 2009 and became the first Bills rookie to make the Pro Bowl since 1984. If Byrd can't go, expect Donte Whitner to start at FS while George Wilson should get the nod at SS.
