Description: The Tigers have reached a two-year agreement with All-Star closer Joe Nathan. SOURCE: Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports
Insight: The deal is worth $20 million. With Nathan now under contract, Brian Wilson, Fernando Rodney, Grant Balfour and Chris Perez are the best late inning relievers left on the market.

Insight: The Tigers are also in need of a closer, though it sounds like Detroit may end up going with Brian Wilson, who is seven years younger than Nathan. The righthander has struggled in four career appearances at the new Yankee Stadium (7.36 ERA in 3 2/3 IP).

Description: The expectation is that Rangers closer Joe Nathan will decline his $9.5 million option for next season. SOURCE: MLBlogs
Insight: Nathan has been angling for a long-term deal but we're not sure the Rangers will go for that because of his age (he turns 39 in November). Joakim Soria and Neftali Feliz would both be options to close if Nathan signs elsewhere.

Description: Joe Nathan is hoping to sign a long-term deal with the Rangers after the season. SOURCE: Rangers.com
Insight: Nathan can choose to opt out of his team option for next year, though it's clear that he'd rather remain in Texas. As well as he's pitched this season, the 38-year-old is unlikely to receive more than a two-year contract at this stage of his career.

Description: According to Fox's Ken Rosenthal, the Rangers could look to deal All-Star closer Joe Nathan at this year's trade deadline.
Insight: Rosenthal says the team is trying to take advantage of a thin market for relief pitching. The Rangers' desire to add a righthanded bat before the deadline might be the worst kept secret in baseball. If Nathan gets dealt, Joakim Soria, a closer during his days in Kansas City, will slide into the ninth inning role.

Description: Rangers closer Joe Nathan went 11-for-11 in save chances and had a 0.63 ERA and a 0.63 WHIP in the month of June.
Insight: Nathan is 27-for-28 in save opportunities this year and has a 1.51 ERA. He's back to being one of the top relievers in baseball after Tommy John surgery knocked him down a few pegs.

Description: Rangers closer Joe Nathan saved his 19th game of the season Sunday against Toronto.
Insight: Nathan has blown just one save this season and has a 1.78 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in 25 1/3 innings.

Description: Rangers closer Joe Nathan turned in a dismal performance Friday night against the Orioles. He was tagged for two runs on two hits in only an inning of work.
Insight: Nathan needed 35 pitches to finish the frame. The two insurance runs he allowed gave Baltimore closer Jim Johnson a comfortable four-run cushion to work with in the bottom of the ninth.

Description: Joe Nathan worked a 1-2-3 inning on Sunday to earn his third save.
Insight: Nathan has a blown save and two losses this season, so there was concern that he might lose his job. Mike Adams and Alexi Ogando each recorded a save this week, but Nathan was back in there on Sunday. They'll be plenty of save chances in Texas this season, so even if Nathan gets a day off here and there, he's still a good bet to nab 35 saves.
4/12/2012 6:16:00 PM
Description: Joe Nathan got an off day after blowing a save on Wednesday. Mike Adams picked up the save in Nathan's place.
Insight: Nathan had thrown on two-consecutive days. The new Ranger has two losses and a blown save already this season, but Rangers manager Ron Washington dismissed the notion that he'd consider making a switch at closer, according to the Dallas Morning News. Adams wasn't exactly dominant in his closer cameo, giving up a run on two hits.
4/12/2012 3:13:00 PM
Description: Joe Nathan's blown save spoiled a great outing by Rangers starter Colby Lewis on Wednesday. Nathan allowed four hits and three runs in the ninth inning as Texas lost to the Mariners 4-3.
Insight: Nathan's ERA ballooned to 9.00 after the loss. It was Nathan's second loss of the year. Nathan isn't in any danger of losing the closer's job but he has looked shaky so far in 2012.
4/6/2012 4:55:00 PM
Description: Joe Nathan is one for one in save opportunities as a member of the Texas Rangers. Nathan shut the door on Chicago Friday, breezing his way to a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Insight: Nathan was very ordinary in his return from Tommy John surgery a year ago (14-17 in save opportunities, 4.84 ERA for Minnesota) but he looked solid Friday. The White Sox don't have the toughest lineup in the league and Nathan certainly won't be as dominant as he was before the surgery (he turned 37 last November) but he'll get plenty of save chances pitching for Texas this season. Thirty-five to 40 saves doesn't seem out of the question.

Description: Former All-Star Joe Nathan took over the closer's job for the Minnesota Twins and promptly picked up his first and second save since April 8.
SOURCE: YAHOO SPORTS
Insight: With Nathan taking over the job again, that means Matt Capps lost 90% of his fantasy value... if not more. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire announced the switch before Saturday's game against the Kansas City Royals, with Nathan returning to his familiar role and the struggling Matt Capps moving back to be a setup man. Nathan pitched a scoreless ninth in Minnesota's 4-3 win Saturday and did the same thing in Minnesota's 4-3 win on Sunday, getting a standing ovation as he entered and finished the game.

Description: The Minnesota Twins have placed right-handed reliever Joe Nathan on the disabled list due to soreness in his surgically repaired elbow. He said he's prepared to miss between 10 days and a month.

Insight: The uncertain time frame is a bit concerning but stash Nathan on your DL for now.

Description: Twins reliever Joe Nathan was unavailable for Friday's game because of elbow soreness stemming from his appearance on Monday.
SOURCE: Yahoo Sports
Insight: This is concerning news if Nathan has missed about a week due to elbow soreness, especially considering his recent Tommy John surgery. Keep track of his progress.
4/23/2011 9:25:00 PM
Description: Joe Nathan finished out the game today in a non-save situation for the Twins in their big win today over Cleveland, striking out two and facing the minimum three.
Insight: Apparently it was Nathan who went to Ron Gardenhire and asked to be taken out of the closers role. Again, Gardenhire wants Nathan closing games, that may or may not happen again this season. If Nathan continues to put things together and get stronger expect him to be in a setup role for Capps soon. Today was a good start in that direction for Nathan who had to feel strange pitching the ninth in a non-save situation.
4/20/2011 5:20:00 AM
Description: Twins RP Joe Nathan allowed a walk, 2 hits, including a HR, and 3 runs in the 9th inning of yesterday's blowout loss to the Orioles.
Insight: This was a non-save situation but it is still bad news for Nathan owners. He was given an opportunity to show he could pitch well in the 9th inning and did not respond. This outing will not help him in his quest to regain the closer role for the Twins.
4/16/2011 9:13:00 PM
Description: Twins closer Joe Nathan allowed 2 runs in just 1/3 of inning to take the loss against the Rays.
Insight: Matt Capps also allowed a run and has a season ERA of 4.50 so it is not like he is pitching well enough to displace Nathan as the Twins' closer.
4/8/2011 9:25:00 PM
Description: Twins closer Joe Nathan got his third save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out one against the A's.
Insight: Nathan started the year as an injury risk but has been very consistent to start the season. Expect him to get some time off to decrease his risk of re-injury, but he looks like he is on pace for a 30+ save season.
3/31/2011 6:18:00 PM
Description: Ron Gardenhire announced Thursday that Joe Nathan and Matt Capps will be sharing the closer's role early in the season.
Insight: If Nathan can prove his health, the closer's role will be his alone. If you have Nathan, it might me a good idea to grab Capps just in case he is not ready.
